Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Whenever I go over to the clubhouse to get the cards that come from NC, there is a point, about half-way there, where I just stand in the sun. It’s still not warm enough for me to be out without a light jacket or a shirt, (30+ years in Las Vegas Valley, plus CFIDS, plus low body temp) but the sun feels so good I just have to stand for a minute and hope I don’t have to move for an incoming car!

The clouds are still looking like haze, but no rain in the forecast.

I’m waiting for the packet from AAA to show up. Nothing in today’s mail but ads for services for old people.

Got any 7s?

They put those things up when they think people often travel too fast and they think the reminder will cause people to slow down. I don’t think they monitor them.

Patrick is in a snit because I said he can’t eat upstairs any more, after he left food trash up there one too many times. James is in a snit because his dad said he can’t be on the computer all day and fixed it with a timed cutoff.

Sometimes life really wears you down!

Go Fish.

I figured it had to do with monitoring the amount of traffic on the road for the possibility of improvements. It’s not a very good road. But since I have to accelerate in order to get the BB SUV up the hill, I’d rather not have a reminder of how fast I’m going. Especially since the speedometer reading is five miles an hour slower than actual speed.

So whatever they put it there for, I’ll ignore it for a while and go the flat way.

I wouldn’t allow food anywhere but the kitchen. I was such a mean mommy.

I also escaped the curse of electronics because there were none when my kids were growing up. ;o]

Pat was told about the food trash a lot of times.

As old as he is, I would imagine so. He’s old enough to know better. He’s got a job, if he wants to trash a place let him move out and trash his own.

“I killeded deese mouses!”

Good morning.

It’s very disconcerting to get up and find a morning floof already up and waiting for me to start my day!

Why didn’t someone tell me that when old joints move slowly it’s because of the pain? You don’t have to answer that. It was entirely rhetorical!

I called my son yesterday to wish him birthday greetings, so he called me back in the evening. He didn’t understand about me changing the dates on the moving truck and I explained that if I didn’t do it that way, the price would go up every time I tried to set up a new contract.

He had a pretty good day, as far as working birthdays are concerned. He got all the VW parts he wanted for his current restoration!

I’m glad your son was able to get the parts he wanted. Orders of anything are difficult these days, as you have noted.

Good morning. I was up promptly today. Later, I’m going to the dermatologist to have a “procedure.” They took a spot off earlier this year, and it was “abnormal,” so they want to take off the rest of it.

I suppose it will hurt.

To paraphrase Neil Sedaka, “Growing up is hard to do.”

Good heavens, did I just date myself!

When we were raising our kids, counting to 3 after giving a command was common. We decided our kids wouldn’t get 3 chances of disobedience before having to obey. So we would sometimes give a “warning” and sometimes go straight to the discipline.

If our kids ever gave us lip about not giving them a warning, we would recount the story of Joni Erickson Tada and let them know that sometimes there is no warning so they need to make good decisions every time.

Is it Friday Eve? I think it is. It’s so hard to keep track on these holiday weeks.

Happy Friday Eve!

FS got the parts from other people so that’s even better. But then, he knows a lot of VW folks, so...

I remember about the “abnormal” spot, but it can’t be too serious if it’s taken this long for them to notify you. At any rate, I’ll say a special prayer for you today.

I have an appointment at noon, so I get to be out in the almost-100° heat for a few minutes!! It will almost feel like sitting under the gazebo with Charlie, again. ;o] I used to do it just so I could warm up.

They notified me within a week, but it took this long to have the removal. I’m not worried.

I called to verify the location for my procedure, and they said it will have to be rescheduled again. I’m going to tell them that since it’s obviously not important, why don’t we just skip it?

Ah. My apologies.

Perhaps they would have been more persistent had there been the need for concern. When do you have to leave?

Now, I’m going to go make the bed. After that? Who knows?
