Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Oddly enough, my son didn’t fall asleep as he usually does (speaker-phone calls) so there was more to talk about. It was probably his sugar levels that made him nap like that. Dieting and exercise have helped him enormously!

I’m sorry Tom the Son won’t be over to visit with you this evening, but I’m very proud of him for working so hard on his physics. It will pay off!! :o]

Have a good evening, anyway, and maybe he’ll show up for left-overs for breakfast!

And now, I’m taking my tired body down the hall. Today was far too long...

What pretty blue eyes on that floof!

Good morning!

I was so tired last night, I almost turned the alarm off. But then Walmart. It was so hard to get up when it rang.

Now I have to get dressed and start acting human.

I found out during the phone call that my youngest grandson, Sam, is working at the Goodwill store in Cabot, so finding furniture will be easy! PW says she never knew what it was like to shop in thrift stores, but FS loves doing it, so he can go with me.

I’m getting more excited by the day.

Thanks! It wasn’t too bad, if I discount all the pit stops. I ate a sodium-laced lunch.

Good morning. Sally worked at a Goodwill for a while.

It is chilly here this morning, but the sun will come along eventually. Letters are going out today. They are numbered on the back flap, so don’t start reading until #1 arrives, even if you have all the others!

Great!!

A large letter will go out to you today with a few enclosures that may or may not be of interest to you. You can read them in any order you choose! ;o]

The clothes are in the bedroom waiting to be folded, but I can’t do that until I get back.

My ultimate goal on these schedule changes is to be available for more things without making myself too sick, but unless Walmart changes their hours back to 24-7, I’ll have to make sure that I get up no later than 0400 on Tuesdays.

In talking to the kids yesterday, I also found out that since they have a family plan at the gym, I can be included if I pay $X for a six month membership. Sam paid $99 for his, so that won’t be too bad. (They paid six months in advance to avoid a one year contract.) So I can work out with them three times a week and tighten up some of this fat flab that is the bane of my existence!

Yes, well, things have to get done.

Our main event was walking the dog, who still needs a lot of work. She seems to believe her ideas for what to do are more important than our ideas of what she should do. Or, more specifically, how she should do it. It’s keeping her from meeting the dogs she wants to meet.

Back from Walmart.

We didn’t have to wait too long for Robert to come and open the door, so I was in and out in 25 minutes. Another five to load the BB SUV and put the cart someplace other than the walkway, driving lane or parking spots, and I was on the way home.

I had to pull over because some things shifted, and that was all it took. Three cars passed me in the minute it took to rearrange the stuff, and the last one was NOT going to go any faster than necessary! It was OK, but there is a hill the has to be driven just before my cut-off, and with the engine like it is, if I don’t get a running start, the truck will take the hill at 35 and slower as it gets to the top.

Anyway, I’m home. I need to put more gas in the car, and get laundry change, but the jury is still out on when that will take place.

Hiya, ArGee. I hope your weekend was pleasant.

Congratulate me.

Today marks TWO FULL MONTHS since I applied for Social Security.

The review process is supposed to take 2-4 weeks, I’m on week 9. They still aren’t done reviewing my claim.

Are they dragging their heels because they are finally out of money? Or?

Congratulations!

Welcome to the world of no privacy in your personal life whatsoever. You will now (if you haven’t already) begin to get ads for funeral/burial/cremation packages, medical/health care programs and other items for those “old folks.” If you decide to join something, avoid AARP. Choose AMAC — for American Conservatives.

Of course, you probably already know all this, but if you need any help, I’ve been navigating the system since my mid-fifties, due to CFIDS.

And remember, no matter what they say, they do NOT want you to become independently wealthy. They want you on the dole so they can control you.

In my opinion, they are dragging their feet out of pure incompetence and indifference. What’s it to them if you wait and wait? They’ll still get their paychecks if they do literally nothing all day.

Back from the library, where they must be getting flak about their mask policy, because they have signs up that say, “We know the governor relaxed the rules, but we don’t care!” For free books, we’ll put up with it.

The ATM wouldn’t accept a deposit. They must not have emptied the hopper after the Federal holiday. Why does everything have to be such a damn hassle?

You’re right, they don’t care. To prove how little they care, when Igor died, I called the SSA office to put in a claim for his benefits. The guy who answered the phone asked for my SS# of course, but instead of asking me what he could help me with, he started to tell me something about my own account, and as politely as I could, I asked him how he could answer my question when I hadn’t even asked it.

He never said a word. Just put me on Perma-hold. Of course, my limit on Perma-hold has always been 10 minutes, and then I hung up and called again. I didn’t realize I had hurt his little feelers until the Mortuary Music from the Perma-hold got worse. Then I laughed!

When I called back, I explained the situation to the lady who was next in the queue for operators and she was apologetic and helped me get what I needed.

The gal I got at TDS the other day was so rude, I just knew she had a future in a government office. She ought to apply at SSA.
