Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

She hates me because I typed her name wrong. It’s Phoebe.

According to weather.com, the rain is supposed to stop by 1:00 p.m., with a 15% chance during the next 24 hours. Pat needs to be at work at 2:00. I told him he could be dropped off on the way to Mass if he’s ready to walk out the door at 11:55, and if not, he can walk. Should be fine to walk back at midnight, too.

Right now, it looks like Wednesday morning will be nice for our planned excursion to a historic cemetery. After that, more rain until Friday, with a seasonable but mild (60s/40s) weekend. We had discussed taking Tom out to Seaboard on Thorsday evening to celebrate his birthday, but that looks like the worst weather. Maybe we can do it Friday: depends on Envirothon. Saturday is his actual birthday; DP will make a steak meal, and we can all admire the full moon.

It’s still sunny here, but the closer that cold front comes, the more places on me are beginning to hurt.

I just put some cornbread in the oven so I’m waiting to cut into it and have a warm slice with butter. A SMALL warm slice!

I hope whatever Birthday Plans you make turn out to be memorable for Tom. How old will he be? I can’t seem to get used to your kids all being from the Land of the Giants, now, while I’m just one of the Little People!

The best BBQ meal I ever had was made with Igor’s recipe for Hawaiian teriyaki steak. He got the recipe when he was stationed on the Big Island between WWII and Korean Conflict.

That’s actually extraordinarily clever. Unfortunately, I’m a staid old lady in a long dress, and I’d get dirty lurking in the shrubbery.

Maybe Shannon could become a social media star.

Well, it has been awhile...

Perhaps a resurgence is in order?

What a sweet little floof!

Good morning.

The laundry is done, but for hanging the shirts, and I thought I would never be warm again. The wind chill is 22° and when I got to the laundry room, I had to come right back because I had left the bag with the detergent, quarters and puzzle books at home. *sheesh*

Then the zipper on my coat got stuck and I couldn’t figure out how to get out of it. But it’s really amazing how much that coat has grown since last winter! ;o]

Anyway, I was about 15 minutes late just getting started on the laundry and I hate when I do that. I left my watch home, then forgot to set the timer for the dryer and if I didn’t know better, I’d think this was Monday.

My Favorite DiL called yesterday, with my son watching football on his phone, and she “just wanted to talk.” She’s come a long way, that girl! Favorite Son was sportingly quiet...

Good morning. It is Monday here, too. It’s nice that you had a chat with your daughter-in-law.

Pat is off work today.

Well, here it is again, Monday.

8 more days and then we can get this fracking US election over with.

Or ... not.

Good morning. I don’t think it will ever be over. Fracking might be over, though, and then Upnorth people can freeze in the dark.

This thing with my daughter-in-law is quite different from the gal who called me within two months of her marriage to my son and asked me if I was insured. Because “we don’t want to be stuck with your funeral expenses.”

It’s amazing what forgiveness can do!

I have an appointment in St George, but I don’t feel that I want to fight 40 mph winds while trying to keep up with the traffic at 55 - 65 mph. It will wear me out to drive 60 miles in conditions like that.

I’ll try to reschedule for later in the week. I’m just not up to fighting the wind in that little lightweight vehicle. It will be blown all over the road.

Good Monday morning, ArGee.

How was Puppy over the weekend?

I’ll put my ballot in the drop box this week. I wish they had a section for voting on the weather...

I’m torturing the youths with math facts and soil science while sorting the Lego bits that have come unsorted since I had them all sorted. Lots of them have migrated upstairs again, too.

That reminds me, I need to schedule a haircut. My hair is creeping down my neck in a werewolf sorta way.

Patrick has been called; hopefully he’ll arrive in time to get something done.

I just left a message with my hairdresser. Hopefully I’ll have an appointment scheduled by the end of the day.

Patrick finally showed up, but his teeth were gross, so I sent him back to try harder. *sigh*

As soon as Patrick has a Love Interest, his teeth, and the rest of him, will be remarkably clean.

I just called to reschedule the appointment, and have to wait until someone comes in to do that. In the meantime, I’m going to have to put an ice pack on my knee. The pain woke me up last night, but after an ice pack, I was back to sleep in 45 minutes.

Now that the laundry is done, I want a nap but the bed hasn’t been made. I’m also on the lookout for the Lawn Disservice Guy so I can put the windshield cover on, if I have to. What with the wind and the cold, he may not show up until Thursday.

I also need a haircut, but I may have to wait a few weeks, yet. My hair is really getting thin, and sad as it sounds, I may end up having to wear wigs. Unngh.

Thursday morning for my haircut.

Patrick was finally ready, and we finished Act II of Henry IV, Part 2. Tavern scenes, mostly, full of dirty jokes, most of which went right over their heads.
