Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

James has arrived and reported that it’s nearly lunchtime, which means I should take shower, but I’ll bet there’s no hot water.

That kitty looks like our Sam all floofed up for winter. Our guy doesn’t grow in a winter coat cuz it’s not that cold here and he’s indoors nearly all the time. But he’s got that same blend of colors.

Evening. Our Jake is darker.

It’s been cold here the last several nights. Maybe we’ll get snow this winter.

The laundry is done! Well, except for making the bed and hanging the shirts to dry.

I was at the laundry room at 0100 because I woke up at 2330 and HAD to get up. No use trying to go back to sleep for two hours, so here I am.

Instead of going to Walmart tomorrow, I’m going this morning. I’m out of stuff and I can’t see the sense in waiting.

The first Christmas card came!! YAY!

Good morning. I say that in an “Every morning you’re above ground” sorta way, because Monday, and it’s raining.

The Student Driver is off work today. I’ll have to get him to take me somewhere.

Kitteh rules! No snuggly!

Good morning.

When I got back from the laundry room I decided to watch/listen to the Devotional that was presented yesterday. It had a lot of hanky alerts in it, in the stories of the Savior. There was a poem I’d never heard so maybe the speaker composed it. It was a nice, Christmasy hour, complete with the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square singing all the favorite carols.

Not a bad start to Monday in this part of the country.

Every time I read “Good morning” or hear it, I think of Gandalf and his exchange with Bilbo. “Do you mean it’s a morning to be good on? Or...” Yeah... the rest of it escapes me but I thought that was one of cleverest things I’d ever read, way back in 1970.

I had to get the books at an office supply store. They were considered “underground” books at the time.

I couldn’t get the heater in the clubhouse to come on and the whole time I was there, I couldn’t warm up. Taking the wet clothes from the washer and putting them in the dryer was like having my fingers turn to icicles.

Not a fun experience today. But it IS Monday.

Cold places should have heaters. It’s pretty cold here, too, although not like where you are.

I’m glad you had an uplifting recording. It’s hard to beat the Tabernacle Choir! I’m listening to children bickering.

I’d put in my application at Walmart, but I was told I shouldn’t even talk about something like that.

Goodness! Why shouldn’t you talk about Something Like That?

Children bickering is not nearly as pleasant as the Tabernacle Choir!

Since the car accident in 1969, I haven’t been able to tolerate the cold very well. I didn’t mind it too much before then, but the shock was so deep they thought I wasn’t going to make it. It takes a long time for me to warm up, which is most likely the reason why I stayed in Vegas for so long.

It got cold in Vegas, too. I remember your saying so!

My mother’s friend Louie, the Battle of the Bulge veteran, always told people to stop complaining about the heat in Florida!

Why shouldn’t you talk about Something Like That?

It's distressing to Others.

Yes it did get cold in Vegas, but not so soon, not so cold and not for so long a time.

I would tell those who complained about the heat there that it was a desert before they moved there and will be a desert long after they’re gone, and no one made them move.

For some reason they thought I was rude.

Ah. Yes. The Others. One must always be cognizant of Others who inhabit the same space, no matter their ages.

Happy Monday, ArGee!

It’s cold outside! Thirty-two degrees. Not complaining. But if I were, I’d add that the cold pinches my face, but I’m not, so it isn’t. ;o]
