Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

No lie! I find in about the same amount of time, give or take a second, but as I said, its not genius — its actually spatial.

That, too! In my case, it was solving 500-1000 piece jigsaw puzzles from the age of eight (I think) on. Be that as it may, the problem with most people is that they don’t know HOW to look for something so they can’t find it.

Nothing accomplished. Mostly because my Favorite Daughter was having a meltdown, so I spent almost an hour with her via emails and text messages. When I was done, I felt all worn out. And here I am. Wasted.

My brain shouldn’t have to work so hard so early in the morning.

My lunchtime usually coincides with yours.

It is exhausting dealing with other people’s meltdowns or even moderate flusters.

We have sunshine today. Nap With Jake could be a thing.

I’m tired of having meltdowns but I don’t know how I can just not have CFIDS, which is the cause of all of them. It’s hard to have them and know I can stop it.

With my Favorite Daughter, everything is harder than it should be because she has never been encouraged to control herself just like Igor.) Everything is super emotional and extra dramatic, and it’s very difficult to deal with without sounding like Simon LeGree.

Corrrction: It's hard to have them and know I CAN'T stop it.

Dang CFIDS. My brain needs a new editor!

Yeah, I figured it out. I sent you a present. It should be delivered on Wednesday the 16th.

Well, you’re right about this. Asuncion told me this morning that she couldn’t participate in the Novena because of internet issues at her house, and I’ll bet there are others with connectivity issues or who can’t afford the data charges.

It’s not like we have another choice right now, but for the long term, “live in person” seems to have some major advantages.

Favorite Daughter is always trying to get me to participate in Zoom or online chat of some kind.

I figure I’m better off not getting in the habit in case the grid goes down on a semi-permanent basis.

The second hour of meetings each week is always on Zoom, but so many people have trouble connecting or staying connected. It doesn’t seem be be internet connection so much as a Zoom connection. The entire system has always been iffy, right from the first.

Kitteh has such a warm coat!

Good morning.

I hope you slept well.

Since I slept in, I now have the S-L-O-W-s.

It will be nice to actually wake up. ;o]

I don’t think I’ll be going to church this morning, because I can’t seem to shift into the right gear. Everything is grinding. Noisily.

Have a hot beverage and see if things loosen up! I’m so used to going to church in the afternoon, now, that I would feel weird doing anything else.

I’m playing “Extremely Soothing Cat Therapy Music” on Youtube, hoping it will help my brain after the dreams yesterday and last night. My mom was in one of them. She wanted me to do homework, but the furniture kept moving around, and the lamps were never plugged in. Also Anoreth and dog were there, producing crumbs on the tables.

We shift church times every year. In January, we start at 0900, then in 2022, it will be 1030, then noon, then 1330. I can do the first two, but the others are way beyond my capacity.

I know I had dreams, but I don’t recall what they were. I only seem to remember them if they are pleasant or disturbing.

It’s sunny here, which is nice. Maybe I’ll get more Christmas cards ready today.

I didn’t even work on the Christmas cards. I meant to. My brems. It’s still dark here, of course, but at least it’s a little warmer than yesterday. It’s a toasty 30°!

This kind of weather, I have to let the truck warm up a little longer before I shift gears because the transmission is so cold. So I often take that time to say a prayer. It’s a comforting habit!

On the other hand, maybe I’ll sit around listening to Spanish Christian pop music.

There is a flip side to everything. I figured today I would just be lazy, and worry about the coming week when it shows up.

The sun is trying to make itself known, but it’s either still behind the mesa or it’s behind a cloud. The street is winter-dismal.
