Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Those photos are locked in your memory.

Does your carrier back up text messages to the Cloud for any length of time?

I just ducked out to get a green pepper cuz A. I like ‘em and B. Kids are too far away to care!

Thanks!

Not sure of I have ground cumin or seed, but I always have one form or another in the spice cupboard. I can’t cook my dad’s chili without it!

I’ll check on that. Probably, but I’ve never thought about it before now because I’ve always been so careful with what got deleted. My recertification appointment is in a few minutes but I’ll check when I get back. I think they’re automatically backed up, but I’ll find out.

Thanks for the reminder! :o]

Well, if you have seed, do you have a way to grind it; a mortar and pestle, maybe?

Doubt it’d need to be too fine; there’s enough texture to everything else in the skillet that it wouldn’t stand out.

Here. This is Android Only, but...:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync

SMS Backup+

Can’t save everything, but I’ll never worry that changing to a new phone might mean losing entire, ongoing threads of texts.

SMS Backup+ links up to a GMail account of your choice, creates an “SMS” folder in that account, and periodically stows your SMS messages in that folder. I have messaged threads saved that date back to January of 2016.

SMS Backup+ can also be set to create a “Call log” folder in which it will store a record of every call to make, miss, receive or reject; including the number and duration. Multiple calls to or from the same number are saved as an ongoing email thread.

I think Enthusiasm has been on walkabout in The Outback since March 15th; nobody’s seen or heard from it in months.

It’s rumored that Mirriam-Webster is replacing the definition of “doldrums” with “2020CE.”

I’ve been trying to find a mortar and pestle in my price range, but I can’t find one big enough to be more than ornamental, but I’d find a way to grind them if that’s all I had. I haven’t checked because I’ve been a little busy. Unngh.

Thanks. I can’t afford the iPhone products, so Android is what I have and what I know.

Nope. No automatic backup like my last phones. So it’s all lost. But it’s OK. There were only a few photos that hadn’t been saved, and in the future, I’ll make sure to save photos right away.

The rest of the stuff, well, I’m not too thrilled about Google/Gmail.

But thanks!

OK. Here’s what is.

I checked. It’s cumin seeds.

I also checked eBay for lab equipment rather than kitchen supplies and found the perfect mortar and pestle for under $15, free S&H. Some things just make up for other things. And I needed one of those “some things” today. The “other things” will still be “other things” tomorrow and I’ll try to deal with them then.

Today, this is good.

Nah. I didn’t use the back up feature because it was through Google, but I’ve had to re-think that. That company is in my life so much that I finally had to disable to maps because because every month, they would send me a map of where I drove. I’m sure they do it without my permission, but I’d still rather read a paper map and not have the reminder that Big Brother is watching.

And now, kiddies, I’m off to bed. This has been a very, very long and stressful day and I need to get parallel to the deck!

See ya!

That would be me.

Good morning.

James called last night, but the ringer volume was turned down. Today is his birthday, so I’ll call him when it’s daylight in AR!

Now, I’m going to go shower. ;o]

Happy birthday to James! It’s not daylight here yet.

I think it’s cold out: Jake went out and came right back. Then Shannon spewed.

I will pass the birthday wishes to the birthday boy, thanks! :o]

It’s 37° here, but only “feels like” 30°. It’s 27° in Cabot and “feels like” 24°. You’re only 600+ air miles from them, so I’m not surprised if it’s cold enough for Jake to decide he’d rather stay in and watch Shannon spew. ;o]

That darn migraine just will not let go. Maybe after I get The Phone Call, it will dissipate, but I’m not taking bets on it.

I have to go over and get my mail and then finish up yesterday’s business. Then at 0830 I have an appointment at the pain clinic. They want me to pay with my phone, now, and my phone isn’t set up for that, nor will it be.

I don’t think I’ll get much done today in the way of packing because I have to go back to see Chuck at 1100 to finish up on the recertification. I was missing some documents... :o|

I have quite a few darn things in front of me today. I’ll need to make a list!

If I could draw a Darn Thing, I wonder what it would look like. And if I could draw two Darn Things, I wonder if they would look different.

I’ve decided that I want to make my own curry powder again, so maybe I’ll go back to Lin’s on my way to the pain clinic and pick up the spices for it. I did it a long time ago, when I had more time, and felt more like doing things like that, but I just decided I wanted to do it again, when I saw the little jar of curry powder was three years out of date.

I like curried rice, as long as it’s not too spicy. I used to have a delicious recipe for it when my Favorite Son was a very, very short person — “Chicken With Yellow Rice,” and it was flavorful but not spicy so my FS was able to eat it without any problems. Maybe I should look for the recipe...

I found one that was close enough, so I printed it out and will adapt it. There were a lot of recipes but they were cluttered up with a lot of unnecessary stuff that didn’t do anything but add conflicting flavors.
