Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I keep thinking my hands will warm up so I can put my gloves on, but they aren’t cooperating. No matter. I’m outta here. At least I won’t be too long, but that means the heater won’t warm up the truck.

Be back soon!

I won’t tell you how nice it is here. We just finished choir practice, and now we need some groceries.

Yeah, well, I just keep thinking of summer or “just a few more hours and I can be back in bed where it’s warm.”

Back from Walmart. I got everything on the list for the Knights of Columbus food collection.

Excellent! The K of C are awesome!

I just spent 20 minutes cutting up dates for the fruitcake because Walmart had no chopped dates. It’s OK, though, because I had stuck them in the fridge to get them off my counter, and then I dipped the scissors in flour.

My right thumb joint hates me, though.

The leaves are falling like snowflake out there. There is no wind so they’re just dropping off the trees. Strange.

So, now I’m going to have a lunch of sorts and then get back to the next stage of the fruitcake.

I read that too fast and thought you said it was snowing ;-).

I left Jake to take Pat to work. Now I’m making a cup of tea, and then I’ll go upstairs and clean something.

LOL! It’s a little too warm for snow, and I’m hoping when it does come, it waits a while.

I got the dry ingredients all mixed together and was going to mix the liquids, but then I checked the baking time: 2-1/2 to three hours. I’ll mix them up first thing in the morning so the oven can warm my house up. They’ll cool for a while and then I’ll add the glaze, so they’ll be ready to bag up. I hope I get five small loaves out of it. I’ve always made the regular sized loaves.

They might be good!

Remember small loaves don’t need to cook as long.

True. But then, decisions... By the time I remembered that I had already decided to wait until morning. :o|

It’s OK because I think I’ve already had my max caloric intake for one day.

I got to thinking about the last time I made this recipe and it seems to me it was on the dry side. So I researched. I will add some applesauce to it. That should take care of it. If it does, I’ll just put it on the recipe.

And now, I’m off for the night.

I hope your evening is a good one!

I love calendars! I just printed some out for presents, but it took more ink than I planned on, so I need to order more before I can finish. They will be nice when they’re done!

What a unique calico! ¡Que bonita!

Good morning.

I had my shower, and then got busy trying to finish the fruitcake. I don’t recall how many loaf pans it took when I made it before (using regular pans) but I filled eight of the small pans. It’s beginning to smell very, very good!

I also listened to a talk and worked on a jigsaw while doing so, and in a bit, I’ll go make the bed. I keep forgetting I have to go to church today, but it will be good. Last time, I put my lipstick on and it was only when I got out of the truck that I realized I had to wear a mask. *face palm*

I haven’t worn lipstick in a long time.

You seem very productive. I slept in until 6:30; can’t remember when I did that! Jake was happy in his bed in the window and still hasn’t turned up.

The only time I wear lipstick these days is when I go to church, but even that has stopped, now. Still, the thought is there that I shouldn’t toss them just yet!

I think I slept six hours, thanks to the Text Monster.

Tomorrow being laundry day, I’m hoping no one texts me tonight. If I shut off the volume for the text messages, it also shuts off the volume for the alarms. *sigh*

It was a good thing I didn’t try to mix the entire fruitcake last night because I don’t think I’d be able to walk this morning, let alone stand up. Hopefully, the little cakes will turn out well.

It sure sounds like you could use a beep-beep-beep alarm clock, like mine. You could sleep until it goes off, unlike me. I always wake up and turn it off so it doesn’t disturb other people.

It’s really nice when I get to sleep in my little tent.

This is the first phone I’ve had like this. I’ve always been able to adjust the volume on the different apps separately. I wasn’t prepared for this.

But for now, there are other things I need to focus on, and maybe by Monday night, I can just turn the sound off. Not tonight, though, as tomorrow is laundry day.

And of course, I’m still trying to regulate my hours, which is why I’ve been setting the alarm. No matter when I get to sleep, I want to get up at the same time every day. It seems to be the way I’ll be able to get back on schedule.

The fruitcakes are done, but they look disappointing. I checked the date on the baking powder and the expiration is two years away, but the things didn’t even get up to the top edge of the pans. Hmpf.
