Whereupon they will create large numbers of new projectiles to create problems for any spacecraft launched or stationed in that orbit. Looks like going forward, any new launches will have to factor in the weight from additional armor plating.

Kosmos satellite 2251 collided with Iridium SV033 in early February 2009. What a mess.
The Iridium NextGen satellites are subject to this debris still, since they orbit at the same altitudes (approx 400 nautical miles).
