Florida student sent home when ‘time of the month’ is mistaken for COVID-19

Girl required to get doctor’s note

A Florida girl was sent home from school when a nurse indicated that fatigue from her menstrual cycle could be a symptom of COVID-19, according to WFTX.

The girl, an eighth grade student at Lexington Middle School in Fort Myers, went to the school nurse on Monday complaining of fatigue because she had just started her period. The nurse gave her a form indicating that her condition could be coronavirus-related.

Sheila Gayle told the TV station that her daughter didn’t have any aches, chills or a fever.

The school said she would either need to quarantine her daughter or go to the doctor and get a note proving that the girl was not suffering from the deadly respiratory illness, so she chose the latter.

“This (is) what it’s come down to, so every month I have to come when she’s on her cycle? It’s just ridiculous at this point,” the mother told WFTX.

The girl has since returned to campus and her mother is hoping the same thing doesn’t happen again. The school district told the TV station that it’s trying to be extra cautious to keep students safe.

Poor girl. I’m sure the last thing any thirteen year old wants is her period to make the news.

Students who do not get very sick? Children? How come last October kids were supposed to only stay home if their fever was over 101 or actively vomiting, otherwise kids were encouraged to come to school slightly sick so the schools would get the $ per butt in desk. Ask me how I know this,

Time for the school to buy one of the test kits that give results in 15 minutes. And every school should have a nurse on staff...like we had when I was a kid. I’m 77.

For some reason, this story brings to mind that recent RBG portrait in the news...

Yep. The entire student body knows it was her time of the month. How humiliating.

The school district told the TV station that it’s trying to be extra cautious to keep students safe doing its best to promote and maintain an atmosphere of dread, despair, and panic - to the detriment of its pupils.

Regards,

A lot of girls I knew back in the 8th Grade would have been too embarrassed to return to school at all, unless it was a very large school with plenty of teachers. Of course, my 8th Grade was at a Catholic School. That may have complicated the issue even more.

She simply can’t tell the school nurse she’s tired. If anybody asks she can say she didn’t sleep well the night before.
This hysteria has got to stop.

In high school I once had to drive a female friend to the ER when she got the flu at the wrong time of the month and was convinced she was dying from Toxic Shock Syndrome.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
