In his questioning of Amy Coney Barrett regarding an Indiana case about a non-violent felon and his constitutional right to bear arms, Illinois senator Dick Durbin dropped numerous false claims about Chicago gun crimes. But he topped it all off with one of the most egregiously inane arguments used against the private ownership of guns:
When that Second Amendment was written . . . we were talking about the likelihood that a person could purchase a muzzle-loading musket.
Durbin went on to say that the logical conclusion of the originalist position on firearms should be that the Founders were referring to flintlock muskets rather than modern military weapons. (A purposefully misleading labelling of semi-automatic rifles that Democrats are trying to ban.)
Originalism, of course, isnt the same as literalism. Even it were, Durbin would be wrong. Because the right to self-defense isnt predicated on any one specific weapon but a principle. Which is why the Second Amendment doesnt guarantee the right of individuals to keep and bear Kentucky rifles any more than the First Amendment guarantees the right of individuals to write on parchment paper or to worship in Anglican and Presbyterian churches.

The 2nd amendment is the last bastion of freedom, meant to protect the constitution.
Seeing how brazen the attack is on the 1st amendment, without the 2nd we are doomed.
The founders would WANT the population to have the BEST weapons, in order to mount the BEST defense of the Constitution.
I love shooting my AR so much I have two them. They’re like sister wives to me.
Sorta.
The Founders wanted you to own an M-4, or an M-16, or a M-249 SAW.
Or an RPG or an ATGM or a MANPAD.
They intended us to be armed, at a minimum, like light infantry.
The founders wanted citizens to have the best arms available. It was the citizen that provided the first response to trouble. The only thing that has changed is the number of tyrannical people in government that do not understand that concept.
Thats the correct argument to make.
Senator, when the First Amendment was written people were using quill pens and parchment. Does that mean Congress can ban television, radio, and high speed printing presses?
Then just be quiet and wait for that idiot Durbin to catch fire.

And if ‘Dick Durbin Before He Dicks You’ was right, we could each have a cannon too. And one of those wicked triangular bayonets.
EXACTLY
Federal govt auctioned cannons and ammo left over from the Civil war to the public NY & Phil’s newspapers 1866 +. You could buy a machine gun until 1922. You could bring AK47s n grenades right thru the SF airport 1965-67 from Vietnam n nobody cared. I did troop transport with GI’ s exiting nam.
I believe Durbin is up for reelection this year. He’s using the hearings for free TV time. Although I’m sure he’d love SCOTUS to rule against all modern firearms.
The argument can also be made that If I can afford an F-35 or Apache helicopter, I should be able to have that as well - per the Constitution.
I’m good with that, too!
Light infantry was a minimum.
The firing ranges at military bases (both small arm and crew-served weapons), including the Service Academies, need to be opened up to civilian training. National and State Parks need to have ranges added as well, with as much unrelenting effort as enforcing compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Provided you can make one or find someone to sell you one, don't see why not. Would also add, no government, party or company should be forced to sell you one. Free market.
AR 15s seem to be as rare as hens teeth these days...
Anyone know of a place online you can order and have it delivered locally?
The Founders Wanted You to Own an AR-15
To this day some people can’t understand why people left England to live in an unsettled land.
