New phones run on Apple custom chip that company calls the fastest yet for a smartphone

Apple's iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have three cameras.
(Plus new rear LIDAR Sensor—Swordmaker)—APPLE

Apple Inc. is bringing 5G capabilities to its entire lineup of new smartphones, and keeping the starting prices the same as last year’s iPhones.

The company rolled out four new iPhone 12 devices during a virtual event Tuesday, focusing on camera improvements as well as applications that could be enhanced by 5G. All four of Apple’s AAPL, -2.65% new phones will work with sub-6G 5G, while U.S. phones will be compatible with millimeter-wave 5G.

While sub-6 5G is more widely available, it offers a less dramatic step up in speed and lag times relative to the 4G networks that consumers have become accustomed to in recent years. Millimeter-wave 5G delivers a bigger speed boost but its use cases are more limited to dense urban areas. The phones will have “smart data” modes that determine when to use 5G based on various factors like data usage and battery life.

...

Apple’s new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max feature three cameras meant to deliver better photography capabilities. These phones will have an ultrawide camera, a telephoto camera, and a new wide camera that the company said will improve pictures taken in lowlight and bright environments. The telephoto camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a longer focal length. Both of these models come with a LIDAR sensor, which Apple said will enhance lowlight photos as well as create better opportunities in augmented reality due to its depth-sensing capabilities.

Yeah, I hate that it takes almost a second for a web page to load while I’m FReeping at the mall, waiting for my girl to shop. With a fancier and more expensive phone, it could load in 3/4 of a second! You know how many seconds that would add up to in a year??

Is it true that if you have 5000 or more shares you get a free Apple 12 phone.

I'm a little bummed only because I got the 11 about six months ago (it's great). I'll be looking to go to the 12 as soon as possible.

I've had iPhones for a good 10 years now and they are utterly flawless and practically unbreakable - probably the greatest consumer product in the history of human civilization.

My 2016 ipad pro’s battery is dying
The new iPad Air looks mighty tasty

My 2010 iPad and 2011 iPad machines still going strong on original batteries. I'm thinking of getting a new iPad next month when the new one starts shipping. Getting tired of waiting for the old iPads to die. My wife has a "new" 2013 iPad and is content with hers. I now want one with a pen.

My personal is a dying 5s droid.

The company is an XR that I am slowly learning to like.

Sooner rather than later, I am going to have to upgrade.

I admit I like the XR camera.

I think I saw an article on FR not that long ago that the Pentagon has been told that 5g is going to come.

Wow! $1100 for a phone? What a deal?

Sounds real stupid to me.

It isn't just a phone. It is a handheld computer, a 21st century pager, a dictating device, a gps, a compass, an electronic measuring tape, a professional quality camera, a tracking device, a pocket translator, a video player, an mp3 player, and for some, the keys to your car (with fobs costing $300 these days). If you just want a phone, a $50 jitterbug will do fine.

Sounds real stupid to me.

It’s not a phone. It’s very powerful computer, with a processor that exceeds the power of many laptop processors, with a GPU that equals or exceeds that of many dedicated game platforms, that just happens to make and receive phone calls. It also has the capability to do 10bit HDR 4k video at 60 frames per second, and do special effects in real time, the only handheld computer/camera system in the world one capable of doing so. Even before this iPhone Pro model, iPhones which did not have these superior capabilities have been used to shoot full-length feature films. So, caver, $1100 is a bargain for what you get ... and that is just scratching the surface of what this device can do... plus it makes and receives phones calls. It also contains a GPS system that can direct you to almost any place on earth to accuracy of approximately ten feet. . . And allow you fingertip access to almost every piece of information in the world. You can also find and watch tens or hundreds of thousands movies and TV programs, listen to millions of music offerings when you want to hear them, all in high definition, in stereo or surround sound, or even send that content a much larger screen or speaker system you may have. You can read millions of books, articles, magazines, and view great art, also on demand. No, caver, it is not worth just $1100, it is worth far more, but you can have it for that price of less. You can shop for anything you desire from a stick of gum to a mega-yacht.... but you only see a phone. . . Similar to phones you can buy for $15...

Incidentally, the screen on the new iPhones is four times stronger and four times more shatter resistant than the strongest Gorilla Glass has ever been, using a new Corning microcrystalline ceramic shield unique to Apple.

“(with fobs costing $300 these days).”

My fob died a few months ago (my wife’s still works). I like having to find the car visually and unlock the doors with a metal key.

By the way, I have a smart phone but don’t carry it except when on trips. I can get a replacement phone for $49. Cracked the glass a couple of weeks ago. Still works. I consider the patterned glass to be my screensaver.

You know those white earbuds that hang down? I call them maggots.

Go buy the separate components too do what an iPhone 12 can.
Like camera, portable computer, stereo, network router, telephone, CDs, data storage, gaming console, TV, etc.
All those pieces will cost a lot more.
And not fit in your pocket.

That’s all over the interwebs, and is just plain stupid from a
radiation biology, health physics, and medical perspective

I’d be more worried about all the UV damage to your skin

I’ll be upgrading my 6S+ with a 12 Pro Max.

I was thinking of doing the same thing till I read about the expected features on the iPhone 13: a 4th camera, reduced notch, Touch ID in the display and/or power button and a 120Hz screen - I’m gonna try to wait it out.....
