Parents: Online learning program has racist, sexist content

HONOLULU (AP) — Zan Timtim doesn’t think it’s safe for her eighth-grade daughter to return to school in person during the coronavirus pandemic but also doesn’t want her exposed to a remote learning program that misspelled and mispronounced the name of Queen Liliʻuokalani, the last monarch to rule the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Timtim’s daughter is Native Hawaiian and speaks Hawaiian fluently, “so to see that inaccuracy with the Hawaiian history side was really upsetting,” she said.

Even before the school year started, Timtim said she heard from other parents about racist, sexist and other concerning content on Acellus, an online program some students use to learn from home.

Some people, like this Hawaiian woman, make an issue out of everything they can.

On her behalf, I will think about forgoing canned pineapple.

Fortunately, according to my mother, almost no one cans any more, so that should make issues go away.

Zan Timtim huh? What in the hell kind of name is that? Sounds like a bad Scrabble deal.

"misspelled and mispronounced the name of Queen Liliʻuokalani" Did the native Hawaiians have a written language before the PRIVILEGED PEOPLE showed up? If not the teachers are just respecting the oral history traditions where you just spout what ever you remember.

A couple of years back I found out from the woken-acracy that mispronunciation of one’s name is a micro-aggression; turns out I’ve been micro-aggrieved my entire life and I never even knew it.

We never should have overthrown the Monarchy, Hawaii should have been an independent country.

Never was going to happen. It was us or probably Japan.

We were much nicer then Japan would have been.

I doubt I pronounce Mao Tse-tung correctly either. If you are Chinese, sorry about that.

Don’t you know we should have waited another 10,000 years for the Injuns to catch up on their own? The Prime Directive...

We could have made a deal with them to still have our naval bases there.

And they could have made a deal to let the Japanese have bases there as well.

You either control the area where your bases are or you run a major risk.

Considering what was going on in the Pacific they decided it was an unacceptable risk.

Well it should have been a Commonwealth, like the Phillipines, never a State.

Maybe but then you end up with what we have in the Philippines. No bases at all IIRC and right when we could use them to keep China from flexing their muscles.

It is not pretty but what happened was, in the end, the best for all involved.

Hawaii as a independent nation was not long for the world. Hawaii as a dependent nation would have been a drag on the US and never would have developed the way it has.

And keeping territories as eternal possessions is never the way the US was designed. Territories should become states. The mess we have with Puerto Rico shows what happens when we try to eat our cake and have it too.

Well, seeing as how the Phillippines now has a population of well over 100 million, it’s a darn good thing they weren’t made a State.

And a President who increasingly is turning the Philippines into a Communist Chinese colony.

I know many of y’all hate Facebook, but Duterte is going after Western media companies now. Banning Facebook for its closing of many of his supporter accounts, traced to Communist China). Wants the Philippines to depend on DITO telecom - owned by China Telecom and WeChat. Just like the ABS-CBN shutdown (China Central TV will probably run it now). GMA is next. Netflix and other streaming services are getting banned (Duterte wants to censor them)
