You can find this fun quotation puzzle, to combat early dementia and senility in us baby boomers, in several daily publications. I challenge us with the best ones out there.

The way it works is a letter stands for another letter. For example: AXYDLBAAXR is LONGFELLOW (does not apply to today's cryptogram).

Beware, the game is very addictive. If this is your first time, don't be intimidated, you’ll be solving them all within a few days. If you’re stumped, take a break and return to it.

PLEASE DO NOT post the answer in general comments, but DO post your time and how you made out.

You can certainly send your solution to my private reply, or if you need a hint for today’s Cryptogram ASK THE GROUP FOR HELP!

I suggest printing these out and work them on paper. If you need a little help you can copy and paste it to Hal’s Helper below.

You can then work on the puzzle without using pen and paper, but I recommend that you do NOT look at the letter counter.

HAL'S CRYPTOGRAM HELPER

One last request. Feel free to post a fun or clever clue, the more tangential to the quotation the better, but please don’t put the actual words of the quote in the clue.

Solution to our last puzzle. Simply scroll your cursor over the text while left clicking your mouse, and the words should appear.

FREEDOM FROM EFFORT IN THE PRESENT MERELY MEANS THAT THERE HAS BEEN EFFORT STORED UP IN THE PAST. THEODORE ROOSEVELT

1.) Since the beginning. 2.) Do it every day. 3.) Used to do paper. Been using Hal. 4&5.) I don’t time myself. Some take a while, usually because I get in a mental rut and have to reset. Others I pretty much read through. 6.) Important? It’s a pleasant, if occasionally frustrating, diversion every morning. 7.) No improvements come to mind. Thanks for doing them.

Maybe 90 sec.

Last two letters of last name, most common letter, 3rd word,
off to the races (grammar helped after 3rd word).

1. How long have you been doing the daily cryptogram?

More than a year

2. How often do you do the daily cryptogram?

About once a day. It is something that I look forward to.

3. Do you usually solve on paper or Hal?

*Half the time on Hal (on my work computer)
*Half the time with my own Excel tool on my home computer, just for the cleaner formatting
*Never with paper

Occasionally “in my head”. In June I had bypass surgery and the only electronics I had was my phone. While waiting to get wheeled in I did it in my head to distract myself, and for the rest of the week. I am generally too lazy or busy to do it in my head.

4. On average how long does it take you to solve the cryptogram?

I refuse to time myself. When I did, my *median* time was under three minutes, but I enjoy them much more when I relax. Tough ones might take 20 minutes and that skews the average, hence I specified median.

5. What’s the fastest time you’ve had to date?

Occasionally about as fast as I can type. Some seem obvious by inspection.

6. How important is Today’s Cryptogram to you?

Brightens my day. There are a lot of cryptogram sites on the web, but I like the FR community.

7. Is there anything I can do to make it better?

I can’t think of anything. Ad lib on Sundays, maybe. I also enjoy when other Freepers pitch in with their own.

Been doing Cryptograms since your first post.
I do them almost every day. If I miss a day I’ll do two the next.
Sometimes use Hal, sometimes paper. I used paper always at first, then got lazy haha.
Not sure fastest time. Don’t usually time myself, but I’d guess I’ve done a couple under a minute.
I enjoy these very much but would understand if it got to be a chore for you.
Your posts are just fine the way they are.

1. Been doing these , I thought from the beginning, but at least a couple of years.
2. Probably try to solve it 4-5 times a week. Can’t really get to them on the weekends.
3. Use HAL
4. Average about 5-10 minutes on each problem, but actual overall time is probably an hour with all the interruptions I have to endure.
5. Under a minute of couple of times
6. One of the first things i look for whenever I am on FR.
7. Maybe do a double cryptogram on occasion so the clues some post will be difficult to discern if its for the first cryptogaram or the second.
