While Anna Chapman dominated the headlines surrounding the spy ring, another Russian woman posing as a mundane New Jersey accountant named Cynthia Murphy was closing in on accessing Secretary Hillary Clintons State department, according to records and interviews.
For most of the 10 years, the ring of Russian spies that included Chapman and Murray acted as sleepers, spending a great deal of time collecting information and passing it on to their handlers inside Russia's SVR spy agency, FBI records state.
Murphy, living with her husband and kids in the New Jersey suburbs of New York City, reported a major breakthrough in February 2009 in an electronic message sent to her handlers: she had scored access to a *major Democrat*, FBI records state.
"Murphy had several work-related personal meetings with [a prominent New York-based financier, name omitted] and was assigned his account," one FBI record from the case read.
"The message accurately described the financier as 'prominent in politics,' 'an active fund-raiser' for [a major political party, name omitted] and a 'personal friend' of [a Cabinet official, name redacted]."
Multiple current and former officials confirmed that the Cabinet official was Hillary Clinton, the fundraiser was New York financier Alan Patricof and the political party was the Democratic National Committee.
Back in 2010, when the spy story broke, Hillary Clinton's office issued a statement that there was "no reason to think the Secretary was a target of this spy ring."
Pelaez and her husband were among 10 convicted agents deported to Russia in the summer of 2010 in a high-profile spy swap.
In her account, Pelaez called herself an "accidental victim," insisting that she only found out at the trial that her husband had been recruited by Soviet secret services.
Extraordinarily, Pelaez has maintained that she never knew that her husband, who went by the name Juan Lazaro, was in fact a Russian named Mikhail Vasenkov.
"At the strange, brief and unfair trial, lasting less than half an hour, I learned that my husband and the father of my son, with whom I had lived 30 years, was a former agent of Soviet special services," she wrote.
"I was an absolutely accidental victim, since I had never known about my husband's line of activities," she insisted in her account, translated into Russian.
Since moving to Russia she had learned more about her husband, she wrote, saying he had been viewed as a hero in the Soviet Union.
"He was a hero for the Soviet Union, who left his father's home very young and since then had never seen his parents, brother or other loved ones," she wrote, adding she saw his "sadness at how much everything here has changed."
According to the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Registro Nacional de Identificacion y Estado Civil, RENIEC), Virginia Pelaez Ocampo de Lazaro was born on October 6, 1951.
Her parents' names were Horacio Pelaez and Angelica Genara Ocampo.
Other media reports said that under another document, Pelaez was born on October 6, 1954, and her father was named Santiago Pelaez.
Vicky Pelaez and nine others were arrested in the United States on charges of espionage on behalf of Russia. She was released on $250,000 bail.
Pelaez is believed to be the only one of the 10 spies who pleaded guilty in the U.S. court who was not a Russian citizen.
The 10 were quickly flown out of the United States in an exchange for 4 people convicted of spying in Russia for the West.
The prisoners Russia swapped for 10 spies in the US include a nuclear specialist who has always protested his innocence and a former secret agent said to have betrayed numerous colleagues in the US.
The prisoners, who were convicted of foreign espionage in Russia, were all pardoned by President Dmitry Medvedev.
IGOR SUTYAGIN Sutyagin maintained his innocence.
*Sutyagin is a nuclear specialist convicted of passing information to a UK firm *used as a front by the CIA.
He was serving his 15-year sentence in the Arkhangelsk region of northern Russia near the Arctic Circle when he was suddenly transferred to Moscow's high-security Lefortovo prison, where he told his family and lawyer he was part of a spy swap.
Sutyagin was arrested in 1999 in his home town of Obninsk, central Russia, and charged with treason.
His first trial broke down and he was not convicted until 2004.
He has always maintained his innocence and human rights activists have argued he had no access to secrets and openly worked with foreign academics.
SERGEI SKRIPAL
Prosecutors said Skripal began working for MI6 in the 1990s
The retired GRU colonel was sentenced in 2006 to 13 years in jail for spying for Britain.
He was convicted of passing the identities of Russian intelligence agents working undercover in Europe to MI6.
Prosecutors said he had been paid some $100,000 by MI6 for the information, which he had been supplying since the 1990s when he was still a serving officer.
ALEXANDER ZAPOROZHSKY
One of the names cited by Kommersant is that of a former colonel in Russia's External Intelligence Service (SVR).
Zaporozhsky was sentenced to 18 years of hard labor in 2003 on espionage charges.
He was accused of passing information about Russian overseas intelligence activities to foreign governments, and of revealing the identities of *more than 20 US-based Russian spies*.
Russian media speculated that Zaporozhsky had been behind the exposure of former FBI agent Robert Hanssen, convicted in the US on charges of spying for Russia.
The CIA did not comment.
He worked for an American company in the US state of Maryland after his retirement from the SVR in 1997, but was arrested on a trip to Moscow in 2001.
Oct 22, 2017 GENNADY VASILENKO
Little is known about Vasilenko, thought to be a former KGB officer employed as a security officer by Russia's NTV television and arrested in 2005.
In 2006, he was sentenced to three years on charges of illegal weapons possession and resistance to authorities
These are the four men pardoned by the Kremlin and handed over to the United States in a Cold War-style spy swap.
