How Badly Will an Extended No Sail Order Impact Cruises?
Cruise Hive ^ | Robert McGillivray

Posted on 09/30/2020 10:54:41 AM PDT by Capt. Tom

With the CDC looking to possibly extend the No Sail Order to next year, the White House overruling the CDC, and cruise line executives meeting in the White House on Friday, it seems that chaos reigns in the cruise industry.

In the meantime, some ships have been laid up for over six months. Carnival Corporation is expediting the process of selling 18 vessels. Cruise & Maritime Voyages entered administration. Businesses dependent on the cruise industry ashore are recording record losses, and most crew members have been at home with no income for six months now.

The scale of the industry? In 2017, 25.8 million went on a cruise. 27.2 million people went on a cruise in 2018. $126 billion in total economic impact was generated. One million direct industry jobs paying $41 billion in wages and salaries. This does not account for the billions of dollars generated by the industry in revenue and employment for airlines, hotels, retail, agriculture, entertainment, etc.

It is relatively safe to say that banning cruises any longer is a disaster waiting to happen.

The cruise industry as a whole and the major three, Carnival Corporation, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian Cruise Line, represent such a big part of worldwide economies that these will not be allowed to stop operations altogether.

Royal Caribbean’s assets in 2018 were worth US$27.69 billion, with 77.000 employees. Carnival Corporation’s assets were worth US$45.06 billion in 2019, with 120.000 employees. Norwegian Cruise Line was worth US16.7 billion, with 36.000 employees in 2019.

Although the CDC’s goal is to protect the United States and its citizens, it should also realize that the cruise industry is not just the U.S.; it is a global industry where hundreds of billions of dollars and millions of jobs are on the line.

I’ve never seen a sail on a cruise ship.

When your business is based in putting large groups of people together and putting ships to sea, all your eggs are in one basket. They are fully vested in putting ships to sea.

I still maintain there are rats in the CDC who think cruise ships are just floating playgrounds for rich white people and would not mind driving them into bankruptcy. Ridiculous sure but I believe they are in there.

I sent this article to a friend who was discussing planning a cruise but was unaware of the ‘no sail’ order currently in effect.

How do you sell cruise ships when there are no buyers? It’s not like a ship like this could be repurposed for less than just building a new ship.

I’ve never seen a sail on a cruise ship.

Some of the small cruise ships have sails.

Almost all have less than 250 passengers and have avoided the strict regulations placed on the much large cruise ships that carry thousands of passengers. -Tom

Between cruises, hotels, restaurants, tourism, airlines, and entertainment, I think pain is coming.
I’m sure the coming flu season will cause more cowards to withdraw from society as well.

Interesting never knew that.

I have never been on a cruise. But I noticed cruises have had health problems long before Coronavirus. I remember as far back as the 90s, cruise ships having massive outbreaks.

There used to be one but it was more of a technical wing or foil.

But, yes I get it and I can’t really stand journalism when they talk about modern naval ships that sail. Modern naval ships don’t sail, they deploy or they get underway.

So a Cruise liner doesn’t necessarily deploy on a mission, but they do get underway.

I would much prefer traveling on that then a cruise ship. Unless I was in the brig.

Good, I thought I was being picky. When I learned to sail, it was a thing. Of course, it's been way too long now.

So a Cruise liner doesn’t necessarily deploy on a mission

I'm not sure about that. Don't they have a mission to make all their passengers fat.

Miraculously, once the elections are over and if Biden wins, corona virus will be declared as defeated and the government clamp down will end. Democrat states will lift their restrictions days after the elections.

Just remember, it's all based on “science” and the advise of “experts.”

Now, if Trump gets reelected it will still fade, but like now the opposition will continue to use this and drag it out for as long as it has traction with the masses.

I read a blog I’ve followed for some time written by a man who like many, prefers we become smaller, poorer with much fewer choices in life. He write pretentiously that people will soon discover how happy they are to live without dining out, air travel and cruises.

People will discover they never actually enjoyed the activities, so he says.

*Why The hell do these people always presume to tell everyone else how to live and how to think.

“So a Cruise liner doesn’t necessarily deploy on a mission, but they do get underway.”

‘Sailing’ is universally used in the shipping and cruise industries.
