People don't realize how cold that lake is, even in the summertime.

It's filled by snowmelt.

I had no idea Lake Tahoe was that deep.

The deepest part of the lake is 1,645 feet, so he was nearly at that depth. Only Crater Lake in Oregon at 1,949 feet is deeper. I have swam, fished, and boated on Lake Tahoe for many years and I can't believe they found his body, the lake is huge, and cold. Swim more than 20 yards from shore and it gets very cold fast. It is snow melt fed lake.

[Probably recovered by a submersible. This depth is past the current record dive.]

Thanks. You’re right. Turns out they did it with the equivalent of a giant claw machine. Only they weren’t prospecting for arcade prizes.

Tahoe has a very low temperature. It also has low buoyancy compared to many lakes.

I’ve rented a boat at Lake Mead. You are required to wear a life preserver. Of course, nothing prevents you from removing it after leaving dock.

Yes. Most definitely. I almost died in that lake, truly, and I'm an experienced swimmer. It has an average depth of 989 feet, and gets deep quickly off shore. And, as you said, it can be VERY cold. The kind of cold that causes bronchial constriction and prevents you from breathing. Respect the power of nature! Tahoe is absolutely beautiful, but also dangerous.

I jumped into the water to cool off, at which point the wind came up. I had to swim about a half mile to shore and then walk barefoot at least a mile to where the canoe had blown ashore. Not the smartest thing I ever did, but at least I knew better than to exhaust myself trying to catch the canoe.

Yeah, the thing about Lake Tahoe is that the water is ice-cold, literally, year round. In the summer, you might get the top few feet that are up to 40 degrees or so, but that will still preclude you from swimming more than a couple dozen yards before your muscles start to lock up. The guy was boned the moment he lost his boat.

To be honest, being it’s New Jersey, at first I wondered if they found him with his shoes on.

Lake Tahoe is in the mountains on the border of California and Nevada.

I have swum in Lake Tahoe, near shore and not for long, I can tell you. COLD! Where I was the other time, the water was not very cold. I’m pretty sure I would not have survived a swim like that in Lake Tahoe.

Except a due caution towards your own well being?

“the deepest known recovery in US history, authorities said.”

Project Azorian recovered several bodies from the K-129 at ten times that depth.

In 1981, an Army helicopter with an unauthorized (female) passenger aboard crashed into Lake Tahoe. To my knowledge, the AC and 2 aboard were never found.
