An elderly gardener died from a brain-eating amoeba found in soil after it turned part of his frontal lobe into a mushy liquid, according to researchers in Georgia.

The 82-year-old man is believed to have contracted the shape-shifting organism while potting plants at an unnamed location, and was later struck by seizures, according to a case-study, which was published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The man was first treated for bacterial, fungal and viral meningitis before becoming drowsy and suffering from seizures, researchers from Emory University in Atlanta said in the report. He died nine days after being admitted to a hospital.

You read sometimes about swimmers who contract an ameoba through their nose. Typically in the late summer, in relatively stagnant pools or streams, and more in the southern states. Ingesting an ameoba might destroy it by stomach acids. Coming in through the nose it can enter your circulatory system via the respiratory system. So I understand.

Sounds like a terrible way to go as I don’t know what can be done for a person once it reaches the brain.

I surmised the issue before I read the full article. This proves how knowledgeable and prescient that I am. Damn, I am impressive!

No, you're either lazy, stupid or a combination of both. But since you're also prescient you already knew I was going to write that so you won't bother reading my reply.

Ameoba in the dirt. Ameoba in dirt gets on hands or gloves. Pollen or dust causes gardner to sneeze. Gardner wipes nose with dirty hands/gloves. Amoeba now in the gardner’s nose...

Because alcohol will kill that amoeba if you drink enough of it.

Some journo trying to fit scientific facts into the fantasy world that occupies so many minds. Same principle seen in the descriptive term “mostly peaceful” as in riot.

There was a little spike in these kind of cases where people were using amoeba infected water to irrigate their sinuses with those neti pots a while back. IIRC.

I used to swim in lakes on farms and loved doing so.

How do kids survive?

Your immune system. Ameoba are EVERYWHERE. In potting soil, in bottled water, in the food you eat. EVERYWHERE.

This guy didn’t die because he was digging in infected dirt; he died because his immune system was shot.

I got mersa (spelling). Had a cut. Gardened in my yard.

Started out as a small black spot. Finally spread between two fingers and wasn’t stopping.

MRSA.

Wow, that's terrible. I never heard of getting it from a garden.

People usually get it from hospitals. I hate when hospital workers wear their scrubs around.

How did they stop it.

"Acanthamoeba infection in the eyes can result in permanent damage to vision and blindness, according to the CDC. But most people with normal immune systems will be exposed to it at some point in their lives without getting sick."

Somehow this must (said to) be linked to Climate Change:non:

I caught MRSA in my right thumb harvesting Bluebonnet seeds in my yard. They took the pad of my thumb off almost to the bone. I had to give myself IV antibiotics through a catheter that they inserted in a vein (artery?) in my left arm for about six months. The monthly supply of the drugs came in a box the size of a case of paper. The doctor says I was very lucky because it stopped at the first knuckle.

I knew a kid about twenty years ago that swam in a stock tank and got an amoeba and died about twelve hours later. Evidently there’s a area in your sinuses or nasal cavity where there is only a layer of skin covering your brain.

My doc told me that these amoeba and the MRSA bugs are everywhere.

Yes, it’s usually in hospitals. All these superbugs came to be because of overuse of antibiotics. Even ordinary penicillin doesn’t kill strep throat anymore.

After mad cow hit England, they started doing some epidemiology studies of any indicators of mad cow before the blowout occurred.

What was looked at were a series of incidents that befell people and in many cases Rose gardeners, as it turned out, who are using bone meal in their garden beds that was processed from infected cows.
