Aren’t Jews supposed to be buried within 24 hours??

And, is this going to be another big funeral where Trump is banned?

Are you surprised that news agencies got something wrong?

Here is the official website of the House of Representatives, that predates the passing of RBG, that lists all of the people who have ever laid in state and laid in honor in the Capitol Rotunda.

If you go to it, you will see that Rosa Parks is listed as lying in honor, not state.

Wait, they didn’t give O’Connor recognition? Why?

She retired and she’s still alive.

She’s still alive. I though she was dead but she’s not. She’s 90.

My guess is that she was interred Saturday. People are worshipping an empty box.

Parks lay in repose. A difference only because she did not hold office.

Nope. You need to go read the rules. There are a whole slew of cabinet members, SCOTUS people, and other critters there.

I still say its an attempt at a historial ret-con. It was stated numerous times in 2005 that Rosa Parks getting the honor of "laying in state" was "unprecedented" BECAUSE she was a PRIVATE CITIZEN.

If she was simply given the designation of "laying in honor", AND other private citizens have been 'laying in honor" besides her, it wouldn't have been "unprecedented" at all. The reaction would have been "So what? Jacob Joseph Chestnut and John Michael Gibson were Laying In Honor, and nobody ever heard of those guys"

In practice, both "laying in state" and "laying in honor" means the body is on display at the U.S. capitol rotunda with a 24/7 armor guard from a branch of the U.S. miliary. The only difference is "laying in state" is normally reserved exclusively for dead politicians and "elder statesmen"

In any case, looking at the list of those given the designation of "laying in state", it seems to be oddly random.

Nobody made the list before 1850, because the modern-day U.S. Capitol rotunda wasn't completed yet. Henry Clay was the first to get that honor, but his fellow "legendary statesmen" in the "Great Triumvirate", Daniel Webster and John Calhoun, didn't receive it for some reason.

All four assassinated Presidents (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, JFK) got it, and in modern times, every President in recent decades has automatically gotten it as well (Taft, Harding, Hoover, Ike, Johnson, Ford, Reagan, and both Bushes). RAT Presidents Woodrow Wilson, FDR, and Truman didn't make the cut. Weird. It wasn't like they were considered lousy or forgettable Presidents by the left.

"War heroes"/Five-star general types, like John J. Pershing, George Dewey, and Douglas MacArthur, all laid in state. But others who had similar credentials from the SAME wars, like Chester W. Nimitz,William Halsey, George Marshall, Omar Bradley, etc., didn't make the cut. Again, I would have assumed someone would have introduced a resolution to have them Lay in State. Ditto with pre-World War I "war heroes", like U.S. Grant, David Farragut, etc.

J. Edgar Hoover, certainly a "landmark" figure, but a slimey and controversial one who probably didn't deserve that honor, made the cut. I bet there was political pressure and he had enough files on everyone to make that happen.

Vice Presidents Henry Wilson and Hubert H. Humphrey are the only two veeps given the honor of Laying in State. Again, weird. They were hardly iconic figures who made a major mark on U.S. History, they weren't even well know for being veeps.

Robert A. Taft made the cut, probably the most well known conservative Senator in modern history, so I agree with that one.

Everett Dirksen oddly made the cut, also a great conservative, but that's a WTF moment for me, and basically the conservative equivalent of the left having Darth Bader "laying in state".

Legendary RAT Congressman from FL, Claude Pepper, Laid in State. Don't agree with it but probably got the honor for similar reasons that Bob Taft did. John McCain was Laid In State for similar reasons, "war hero" and media loved him. I imagine they'd want to give it to Colon Bowel movement if he croaks someday. Puke.

John R. Lewis played up the "civil rights hero" for the REST of his career, so of course he got it, though bizarrely enough, aside from Rosa Parks, other "legendary" civil rights heroes like Martin Luther King Jr, didn't make the cut. Nor did any of those "legendary" fighters for woman's suffrage, like Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Susan B. Anthony.

Elijah Cummings, Laid In State, WTF? Maybe the RATS confused him with lookalike John R. Lewis too. That one makes zero sense, he was some forgetting black marxist Congressman who croaked, and didn't even serve that long. Might as well have Alcee Hastings "laying in state"

Bizarre stuff.

I see numerous posts on this thread asking why Sandra Day O'Connor never got the honor of "Laying in State", but Darth Bader did.

I would say its for similar reasons that Gerald Ford got it, but Jimmy Carter hasn't.

Those pesky rules... preventing people from Laying In State if they're still breathing.

I say we give to Joe Biden and AOC... nobody would notice the difference anyway. ;-)

And I just see I made my own typo of saying “both Bushes” were Laid In State, when in reality only GHWB has Laid in State. GWB is still breathing. Whoops!

“I still say its an attempt at a historial ret-con.”

Who cares enough to bother with that? Can’t the media just be ignorant? Maybe they hadn’t heard of Joey Chestnut or the distinction either.

Cummings not on the list on the architect website cause he was laid in statuary hall, which the House alone controls.

Lovely weirdness and ambiguity

“basically the conservative equivalent of the left having Darth Bader “laying in state”.”

_______________

I believe that Justice Ginsburg’s given name was “Ruth,” not “Darth.” : )

“Aren’t Jews supposed to be buried within 24 hours??”
_______________

I asked a Jewish friend that same question, and he told me that burial within 24 hours is more of a general practice than an actual rule, but that the actual rule—Jews are not supposed to be embalmed—means that not having the burial within 24 hours makes for a smelly wake. I hope that they’re keeping RBG in plenty of ice.

I don’t know if Jacob Joseph Chestnut went by “Joey,” but if he could eat as many hotdogs in 10 minutes as Joey Chestnut can then he was fully deserving of the honor of lying in state. But those congresscritters better not give such honor to that cheater Kobayashi.

Because she was pure evil, I always refer to her as Darth Bader Ginsburg.

Similarly, I always refer to Bush's former Secretary of State as Colon Bowel Movement. It accurately reflects what happens whenever he comments on something. ;-)

Oh, now I get it. I thought that it was a typo (the B is next to the V) and I was pointing it out in my usual, sarcastic way.

One opinion on Kavanaugh.
He may become closer to being Kennedy than being Scalia.
