Lost World War II Submarine Is Found in Southeast Asia

In the murky waters of the Strait of Malacca, about 90 miles south of Phuket, Thailand, four divers discovered a World War II submarine that was scuttled 77 years ago, now teeming with marine life.

The wreckage, believed to be the USS Grenadier, was located last October by divers Jean Luc Rivoire, Lance Horowitz, Benoit Laborie and Ben Reymenants, the team announced this month.

Over the subsequent six months, the men — one of whom, Reymenants, assisted in the 2018 rescue of the boys’ soccer team that was trapped in a cave in northern Thailand — completed six carefully planned dives to study and identify the submarine, Horowitz, 36, said Friday from Phuket.

Fortunately all Sailors survived. Unfortunately four died in Japanese POW camps subjected to torture.

I first heard the name of that place in connection with that deadly tsunami some years ago. The jokes were way less appropriate then.

I remember the name Phuket from the earthquake in the Indian Ocean that created tsunamis (was it in 2004?). The water suddenly went way out in Phuket and a schoolgirl who had learned about tsunamis recognized what was happening and warned people to flee, saving many lives.

Opening all vents, the crew of Grenadier abandoned ship and watched her sink to her final resting place. A Japanese merchantman picked up eight officers and 68 enlisted men and took them to Penang, Malay States, where they were questioned, beaten, and starved before being sent to other prison camps. They were then separated and transferred from camp to camp along the Malay Peninsula and finally to Japan. Throughout the war they suffered brutal, inhuman treatment, and their refusal to reveal military information frustrated and angered their captors. First word that any had survived Grenadier reached Australia on 27 November 1943. Despite the brutal and sadistic treatment, all but four of Grenadier's crew survived their two years in Japanese hands.



That right there is why the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was 100% absolutely necessary to end the war.

The war would have raged on for years longer, with many more dead on both sides, had it not been for that fearsome destructive power.

Mine as well, died in the Pacific loading a munitions ship headed towards the Japanese Defended Islands. Some kind of loading accident. No body to send home. 14 years before I was born.

The sailor was so panicked I doubt if he knew the difference between “They’re, They’r and There” at that time.

At least “I” remembered that episode after sixty years.
