Gunfire at a backyard party killed two people and wounded 14 others early Saturday in Rochester, New York, a city that has been roiled in recent weeks by outrage over the suffocation death of Daniel Prude.
A man and woman, estimated to be in their late teens or early 20s, were killed, Simmons said. None of the wounded people were believed to have life-threatening injuries. They were being treated at two area hospitals.

The acting chief said no suspects were in custody, but there was no reason to believe the neighborhood was unsafe.

Growing up in Upstate NY gunfire was not unusual. But it wasn’t people getting shot but whatever was in season. Or varmints.

Not all that long ago - 1940s thru mid 1960s - Rochester used to be one of the Top 10 cities in the country to live in.
I was a teen and my family moved here (Greece) in July 1964 from NYC. I thought I was in heaven.
Just weeks later the race riots started and the city has never been the same.
What a damned shame.

The area has been unsafe for years.
A reminder....Rochester is the 5th most dangerous city in Upstate New York.
Mayor not so lovely Warren thinks that's a badge of honor. But this little shooting...She may get her wish...to be No. 1.

Rochester is one of my least favorite places to visit in the USA. I was at a business meeting in the downtown area when the Rodney King riots erupted. I needed a mounted police escort to walk to the parking garage. There are very few areas within the City that are habitable - there are a few nice neighborhoods off E. Main and E. University outside the Inner Loop - but walk a couple blocks and your life is in danger.

Please ignore the high body count at a party. Neighborhood is completely safe!

Isn't Rochester the city where the entire command staff of the police department resigned in protest?

Is the acting chief normally in the HR department? /s

The illegal mass gathering had 100 people at it before the shooting started.
And nobody narked to the cops. Not a single neighbor. Go figure.

This is yet another tragedy where individuals are having these illegal, unsanctioned house parties taking place in these properties, which number one is not safe because of COVID, because of the conditions, Simmons said.

Yes. Covid is the number one danger at these parties. Not open gunfire.
