I’ll retire with a military pension and want to move to a bicycle-friendly, beer-loving place — so where should I go?

Dear MarketWatch,

I have five years until I retire. I have a nest egg of $1 million and will also have a monthly military pension of approximately $6,000, and Social Security on top of that.

I like cycling 60 miles a day and want to retire in a place that is known for good, safe cycling. I hate hot humid weather and don’t want a lot of snow. I love craft beer. And I would prefer a place with limited or no income tax on a military pension.

Where should I retire? Fort Collins, Colorado, and Asheville, N.C., seem like good places, but the cost of living in Fort Collins seems above average, and I am told Asheville has a lack of housing.

What other places should I consider and how do they compare with the two locations already mentioned? My wife likes the sound of “the Hill County in Texas,” but she knows the heat is bad.

Dear Charles,

The Fort Collins and Asheville areas sound lovely. And popular places tend to be more expensive — that’s just the reality of supply and demand. If that’s where you want to be, the trade-off might be as simple as a smaller house/condo/rental.

You also could seek cheaper housing a bit further from these two cities — Greeley, Colo. (don’t believe everything about the smell), or Hendersonville, N.C. (recommended here), for example. Or what about Raleigh-Durham, with the American Tobacco Trail as the trail network’s spine? You’d have to accept more humidity with that one, however.

I started my search by looking at the League of American Bicyclists’ bicycle-friendly communities. Five, including Fort Collins, are platinum. Housing in only one is cheaper than Fort Collins, but I don’t think you’ll appreciate the snow in Madison, Wis. I ruled out Davis, Calif.,

Arvada, CO is nice. And its soil is so clean it’s been used as a Pb (lead)-free reference material.

With the added benefit that the soil glows at night...thanks to all of the work with plutonium and uranium at Rocky Flats over the years.

How does a person get a pension and SS? They nailed my SS for the “Windfall Act.” Is military immune?

Unless you didn’t pay into SS, you get paid. I think there are some cases where occupations don’t pay into SS, firefighters? They instead get a state pension plan that is quite perky.

I’ve worked with retired military for nearly 30 years as an Advisor. The retirement income is pretty stout, and many of them are out in their 40’s where they take high paying jobs outside of the military. During their careers, it’s common for these military folks to have bought more than one house and done a reasonable amount of investing. Retired military are way more affluent than average Americans.

Granted, they had to endure risk of life, disruption of life, and untold politics and drama.

Neither Belize or Costa Rica tax income sourced from outside their nation’s. Both have pentisionaro permanent resident visas that allow property rights and both can for a price one with perm res get a firearms permit. If heels up N creepy win by idiocy or fraud I’m leaving by Dec 31st no need to stay before Venezuela sets in.

Maybe it's different. I just signed for SS and as my Government pension is well over their $1,000 max they stated the Windfall Act" will give me peanuts. Seems impossible and I worked 20 years for the SS and 20 for the pension. They're telling me it's double dipping.

Windfall Act

it’s a bit further north then Denver but we have nice winters. It will snow but we have many 50-60 degree days between storms. Every once in a while we will get a cold snowy winter but usually the nice days outnumber the. nasty ones

“$6,000 a month in retirement, and it’s likely not taxable.”

Military pensions are taxable.

The windfall act only applies if you did not pay FICA tax while employed. Seems fair that if you did t pay into the system you don’t get the benefits out....

Humble brag. Dude can live anywhere he wants and doesn’t need help picking it out. He’s a big boy. He can do his own homework.

There’s nothing more beautiful than watching an Eagle fly - especially on afterburner.

Speaking of flying...

If I were you I would not do ANYTHING until it is certain who is President which may take quite a while after the election. If Biden succeeds in stealing the election, all that money you talked about could be in great danger especially when the Hobbit ho Kamala takes over, so you may want to make plans on protecting that money as well.
