The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you wont be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
Wow! That couldn’t have been more perfect! What great memories for them and their guests.
Just beautiful!
Fantastic news! So glad you are leaving your troubles behind! :)
Well.....I don’t even have property under contract yet...hahaha.
And I still will be in Satan’s Playshop for another year to 4.5 years.
But having a tangible piece of your dream makes it feel real.
Btw...I just created that nickname for Seattle....Satan’s Playshop.
And for anyone who doesn’t understand why a cop would not immediately stop when you flag him down....why he drives past you then comes back ....or why he leaps from his car when you begin walking up to his car. Just watch the video of the attempted assassination of 2 LA Sheriff’s deputies yesterday.
A police car was described to me as a rolling coffin by a veteran in my squad many years ago.
It is why I once made a man fly who ran up to my car door....never knew a crown Victoria’s door panel could be a trampoline. Fortunately/unfortunately he just wanted to say hello. He admitted he astound have known better having grown up in that neighborhood.
I bet just like me....he occasionally tells that story.
But that would make us less dependent upon the government! And your local gov. or HOA may not allow it.
It never rains in central Connecticut. 10 day forecast shows sunny days, no rain.
It makes my weeding easier. Knotweeding. I’m on day 13. Maybe 4 more days.
Everything is parched in the woods. I’m back running the hose for an hour or two. I know those desert droughts are much worse.
Putting an offer in on 12.4 acres in Fredericksburg TX today.
My favorite lot in this working ranch that is beinf subdivided and sold off....someone got an offer accepted before we could turn ours in. However there is still one fantastic tract available that I am trying to get.
You should see all the native wildflowers on this tract.....
Rose Mock Vervain, Fancy Nightshade, Bird of Paradise Flower (not like you see in Calofornia that looks like the head of a bird.) and all the bluebells are everywhere in September.
Womderful views to East with sunrise this morning from the probable homesite.
And as a bonus...directly in the path of the 2024 total solar eclipse!
4 min 24 seconds of eclipse which is more than double the one I saw in Oregon in 2017.
Nothing going on in the garden aside from picking tomatoes. Mrs. Augie has been after me to whack the weeds, but I managed to avoid that for the time being. lol
Finally got to see the grandkids over the weekend. The weather was decent on Saturday so we all went out to the pond so the kids could catch some fish. None of them had ever been fishing before, but I'm pretty sure they're all going to want to do it again.
This one is Lexi. Just turned 5yo, she belongs to my oldest son Justin and his wife Amanda. Lexi has been asking to go fishing since the first time she saw the pond after it filled, so she got to go first.
Then it was 4yo Rhett's turn. He belongs to #3 son Taylor and his wife Rachel. This kid is a pistol. Pretty sure he's going to be the one that turns out to be Grampa's fishing buddy.
This is 7yo Lennox. He belongs to Taylor and Rachel. Poor guy suffered a brain injury at birth and is severely challenged mentally. After seeing the other two catch a few he looked at me and said "Fish, Grampa?" You could have knocked us all over with a feather at that moment in time. It was obvious that he'd been paying attention. He grabbed the rod and the reel handle just like how I'd been showing the other two to do it, and dipped the jig in next to the dock like a pro. Soon as he felt a tug he was cranking on the reel like he had Moby Dick on the end of his line. Moments like this don't come along very often for this kid. I'm glad I was able to be a part of it.
What great pictures! Such sweet kids! They’re lucky to have you for their Grandpa. Thanks for sharing. :)
My Grandpa Elmer took me fishing all the time. Such fond memories of time spent in the rowboat on Big Silver Lake. :)

I’ve decided to try growing vegetables indoors. I’ve watched quite a few YouTube videos, and most use hydroponics, which I’m willing to try, but I might try some in soil, as well. Has anyone here ever tried growing vegetables indoors during the winter. I know lettuce is easy, but I want to grow tomatoes and cucumbers, among others.
Well, I have told so many people over the years about a way I came up with to preserve fresh basil, so I made a short youtube for those who are interested. Share wherever (no monetization, whatever that is)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N67JnnrVltU
You need a lot of light, a lot of heat and a lot of luck if you’re growing veggies in a regular home. Expect to battle bugs, too.
I’ve been gardening for 55 of my 60 years and all I can manage is salad greens and basil in the winter months and my houseplants get the best of care those months, too. And, sprouting keeps me sane. Zone 4/5, SW Wisconsin.
You might want to look into using a cold frame of some sort (outside) or read these authors for additional help/inspiration on extending your gardening season:
Elliot Coleman, Barbara Damrosh (his wife) and Nicki Jabbour who grows up in Canada.
Very nice! I’m going to try your idea with the basil I have still growing outside.
Looks like you use it anywhere you would use a Pesto - and so much easier! Thanks!

Awesome idea!
I had been freezing mine in ice cube trays with olive oil, sometimes water. But I think your way is much better, not only do not have those little trays to try to get all the oil out of oh, but I’m sure it freezes and keeps much better. The little cubes would get freezer burned eventually.
“It is another big harvest day...more tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers (oh please...make them STOP!), and SWEET POTATOES!”
I’m jealous! I didn’t plant much this year. I’m sick of listening to the neighbors dog when I try to have a lovely morning with my garden. So I’m waiting till we move.
What a Smart praying mantis! I need several of them around my hummingbird feeder.
I’ve had that happen, especially with ground beef. The part that is out of the liquid doesn’t look too appetizing but it will be fine! There is still a vacuum in there.
About halfway up should be good for adding water or broth. You definitely don’t want any more than that!
One thing I really love about canning meat is the delicious stock that I get along with the meat. I usually plan on soup after opening the jar. Something about the pressure canning brings out all the flavor.
