Americans' views of the sports industry take a nosedive, according to Gallup

Americans' opinion of the sports industry has declined dramatically over the last year, plunging the sector deep into negative territory, according to a new Gallup poll.

The sports industry's positive score in 2019 sat at 45%, but fell by a third to just 30% in 2020. Similarly, while 25% held a negative view in 2019, that number shot up to 40% in 2020.

The stark contrast is evident when examining the change in the net-positive scores, which are calculated by combining the positive and negative score into a single number. While the industry earned a +20 net-positive in 2019, the number sank to -10 net-positive this year.

Among political groups the largest decline in net-positive views came from Republicans, as the figure tumbled from +11 in 2019 to -35 in 2020. Independents' views had a steep drop from +26 last year to -10 this year. Democrats' views dropped slightly from a +16 net-positive in 2019 to +11 in 2020.

Among both white and non-white Americans, the net-positive views of the sports industry have taken a nosedive. The +51 net-positive view held by non-whites in 2019 shrank to just +16 this year. The +4 net-positive view of whites in 2019 fell to -22 this year.

Regular sports competitions have faced significant interruptions this year amid the global coronavirus crisis. Additionally, the Black Lives Matter movement has been part of the public conversation, including in sports.

The biggest jock in the sports space is Donald J Trump. Watching him is the new national pastime. He is on every day and he goes 3-4 rounds with media. He back to doing marathon rallies. And he is always pitching somewhere. And they bet on him in Vegas. He is the sports channel for now!

And how many American men know more about pro sports than about their childrens’ schools or neighbors or county government?

If you took a poll here on whether Rich Fitzgerald was our whacko Democrat County Executive, or the General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, I shudder to think what the results would be.

Totally agree. If Trump his holding a rally viewing that online has become Must See TV. Takes priority over anything else that’s on including sports.

I haven’t watched any pro sports since I lost interest in the NFL for good about 15-20 years ago.

It should be interesting the next time a team demands a new stadium or arena or else they will leave town. Hopefully, the citizens of the threatened city responds like Cromwell to the Rump Parliament: “You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately ... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”

I have no interest in watching groups of highly paid men fighting over a ball and then telling me I’m racist. There’s enough propaganda on tv, in print, on the web, and on the radio. I don’t need any more.

I stated something like this awhile back to others, with just a bit of sarcasm:

“I never thought I’d say/type these words, but Thank you China for helping to destroy the four institutions I most-despise:

Hollywood, Academia, Professional Sports & the Democratic Party.”

If we can salvage what remains, I hazard an opinion that it may very well have been worth those results.

“...the citizens of the threatened city responds like Cromwell to the Rump Parliament: “You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately ... Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”...”

Richard Harris, an Irishman no less, did a great job of Cromwell’s dismissal of Parliament in the film, CROMWELL.

I have been conflicted about sports for a long time. If you think too hard about sports, they just seem stupid. The way a guy throws a basketball through a hoop is described as "balletically graceful". All he's doing is throwing a ball though a hoop. It gets dumber with complicated games like baseball. And we wax rhapsodic over a guy trying to roll a little ball into a hole in golf. The more I am away from sports, the dumber they seem.

That's funny - but you're right majua.

Trump's real AND he's fighting the good fight for all of us. We have skin in this game. It's fun to watch, fun to participate in...

Thugball's an imitation of life... which is why we found it interesting. Good vs bad - our team vs 'the other'... But it's always been fake...

And worse, now thugball is between two sides we find offensive which isn't fun.NOT fun at all... Their team kneels to Marxism, our team knees to Marxism. Neither 'team' is fun or worth supporting.

Where have you found Aussie Rules to watch? Ever since they went more pro and Nationwide in Oz it is near impossible to see anything but highlights for me. Bloody AFL broadcast rights.

Amazing how you can totally ruin your image by crossing entertainment with extreme political correctness.

FS1 holds the US rights. It is generally on early in the morning. One interesting thing I notice is that they are playing in front of sparse, socially distanced crowds. And that absolutely no one in the stands, on the field or on the sidelines appears to be wearing a mask.

Masks apparently are only effective against the virus in the Northern Hemisphere.

Sports has brought the races together. People celebrate the accomplishments regardless of race etc.

The owners foolishly chose to allow in game protesting, instead of devoting time and effort to simply have a pre game highlight of players stating what they are doing in their community to better perceived relations.

Also the NFL has enough money to buy a “ special” pre game highlight show of all those types of things.

Instead they wheel out “ weasel Goodell” and his “ we should have listened to Cap” nonsense ignoring the indelible tie between the anthem, flag, service members and the blood/lives lost to have a free country...
