Idaho ranchers frustrated with people taking their working dogs to shelters

FAIRFIELD, Idaho — Great Pyrenees dogs that are working to protect flocks of sheep in the southern Idaho wilderness keep getting “rescued” by people who think the dogs are lost.

Flat Top sheep rancher Cory Peavey is frustrated because he is spending a lot of time picking up his expensive dogs that he uses to protect his herd from shelters or people’s homes.

There are many sheep ranchers in Idaho, and many use Great Pyrenees dogs, something that might look out of the ordinary in the woods to someone camping.

Peavy understands that it might be strange to see a dog in these areas, but he says they are usually just farther from the flock than usual.

“It may just be in the process of catching up with the herd and it will probably find its way, it’s not its first rodeo. These dogs see years of the same route, doing the same thing,” Peavy told KTVB.

They could put tags on the dogs that say “trained sheep dog, please do not take”.

Not sure it would help, but at least then the people stupidly kidnapping the dogs would know.

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), the Lagotto Romagnolo, an adorably fluffy Italian breed, is “generally considered the world’s finest truffle dog.”

"Do people really need to be told this?"

Yes. Urban Democrats, who are outside communing with Gaia, are so indescribably stupid that even if you posted it on billboards at the state line, they would forget.

Remember, they know MUCH more than you ever could. Just ask them.

My mother used to say if you would pet our collie on top of her head, she’d lead you to the family silver. She was that ‘good’ of a guard dog.

However, there was that time when Mom was spanking me and my brother (yep, I’m that old) out in the yard and the collie growled at Mom. Dog was next in line for a whuppin’.

Exactly. Our neighbor has a pair of Great Pyrenees than decided to explore one day and ended up on our property. I couldn’t get closer than 30 yards to either one.

“They could put tags on the dogs that say “trained sheep dog, please do not take”.”

Or, “I know my way home leave me alone”.

A neighbor rescued a Great Pyrenees from a rooftop during the Flood of 93 - its owner never reported losing him so the neighbor was pretty much stuck with the huge dog and a huge feed bill. He paid me to go over and check on him when he was out of town. He was very good with me never aggressive, but woe to any dog that ventured close.
When I was feeding him I noticed that rain or shine that dog would not go into his dog house, so I decided to check in case there were wasps in it or something.

There were no wasps, it was a nice dog house, well-ventilated, dry, no obvious problems with it at all. Turned out there was a nest of wild cottontail rabbits in the dog house and as far as the dog was concerned they were his charges. He let the mother in to nurse but no cat or dog or any other varmint could get past him, so they were very safe.

Most people don’t put collars on LGDs because they could get caught on something in the woods, get caught on some fence etc. It’s also dangerous for them to have something a coyote or wolf can grab onto in a fight while the other wild dogs tear the LGD apart.

Sounds like these dogs are well socialized if people are able to get a hold of them. Great Pyrenees are known to wander but to them, it’s just patrolling. If there’s no fence or the fence is down somewhere, they’ll go as far as they feel like to check for and/or eliminate threats.
