Novel antioxidant makes old blood vessels seem young again
Hypertension/University of Colorado at Boulder/Science Daily ^ | April 19, 2018 | Matthew Rossman, et al

Older adults who take a novel antioxidant that specifically targets cellular powerhouses, or mitochondria, see age-related vascular changes reverse by the equivalent of 15 to 20 years within six weeks, according to new University of Colorado Boulder research.

The study, published this week in the American Heart Association journal Hypertension, adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting pharmaceutical-grade nutritional supplements, or nutraceuticals, could play an important role in preventing heart disease-the nation's No. 1 killer. It also resurrects the notion that oral antioxidants, which have been broadly dismissed as ineffective in recent years, could reap measurable health benefits if properly targeted, the authors say.

"This is the first clinical trial to assess the impact of a mitochondrial-specific antioxidant on vascular function in humans," said lead author Matthew Rossman, a postdoctoral researcher in the department of integrative physiology. "It suggests that therapies like this may hold real promise for reducing the risk of age-related cardiovascular disease."

Half took 20 milligrams per day of a supplement called MitoQ, made by chemically altering the naturally-occurring antioxidant Coenzyme Q10 to make it cling to mitochondria inside cells.

The other half took a placebo.

The researchers found that when taking the supplement, dilation of subjects' arteries improved by 42 percent, making their blood vessels, at least by that measure, look like those of someone 15 to 20 years younger. An improvement of that magnitude, if sustained, is associated with about a 13 percent reduction in heart disease, Rossman said. The study also showed that the improvement in dilation was due to a reduction in oxidative stress.

I will say that MitoQ is structured to “fit like a key” in mitochondria to keep the ubiquinol molecule in there (not migrating elsewhere.

I mention earlier that a substance in most mushrooms, Ergothioneine, does much the same thing as MitoQ. The thing is that Ergothioneine is a unique amino acid you can basically only find in mushrooms and your body can’t make it. Of note: Almost every cell in our bodies has a conserved ion channel that only takes in Ergothioneine to the place in a mitochondria it is most needed.

Sadly, you can’t find supplements with Ergothioneine. So eat your mushrooms!

These prices are cheap if they give you a longer, healthier life. With my lock, the medicine thar stops aging will come out when I’m 85. I’m not all that sure I’d be excited about it if it came out now.

Heart attacks used to be the #1 cause of death. Now, with all the wonderful supplements, we can live long enough to get Alzheimers.

But then there is this: "The targeted anti‐oxidant MitoQ causes mitochondrial swelling and depolarization in kidney tissue" suggesting it may interfere in the body's primary function of cleansing the blood https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5880956/

this “article” was basically taken for an advertisement for this product ...

btw, here’s published scientific study that says MitoQ actually damages the kidneys:

We found shiitake, maitake, oyster, porcini, and a few others had varying amounts of a similar substance and went went changing our diets to eating mushrooms whenever possible
........
I regularly drink reishi, lions mane and chaga tea. plus I take a couple mushroom pill supplements that with the same combination plus cordiceps.

Is there a place where we can go to see which mushrooms have the greatest combinations of similiar acting substances?

I found that ergotheinine, found in certain mushrooms, does about the same thing, but the mitochondria has a way to regenerate that antioxidant molecule for up to a month, while this only lasts a day or two before it needs to be replaced in the mitochondria. Still, it appears to work.

This paragraph is not quiet clear to me. Is this the proper interpretation of that paragarph:

I found that ergotheinine, found in certain mushrooms, does about the same thing, but the mitochondria has a way to regenerate the ergotheinine molecule for up to a month, while MitoQ only lasts a day or two before it needs to be replaced in the mitochondria. Still, it appears to work.

You can buy ergotheinine at swanson’s. why not just do that—rather than buy mushrooms? seems cheaper.

Btw did you find any positive results?

Yes, I intended to say MitoQ lasts two days and Ergothioneine lasts nearly a month.

Can you provide a link at Swanson’s Vitamins for Ergothioneine? This one I list below is from Amazon and it’s $90.

Supersmart - L-Ergothioneine 5 mg - Natural Mushroom Extract - Anti Inflammatory & Antioxidant Supplement - Protect Mitochondria | Non-GMO & Gluten Free - 30 Vegetarian Capsules

Thanks!

We did well with the MitoQ for that time and we continue to eat mushrooms a lot.

Neither of us can point to any negatives, but we can’t say some ailment seemed cured, either. On paper, it all makes sense. We have a good amount of energy and are happy.

I can say we gave MitoQ with PQQ, nicotinamide riboside and other useful supplements to a relative with a 2 inch tumor on a CT scan and in the course of the 1.5 months to the actual surgery, his tumor disappeared on the CT scan by the day before surgery. So, the doctors flipped out and couldn’t understand what had happened. They wound up doing multiple tests and found nothing. In fact, he had serious liver disease on top of the liver tumor, and that has been largely repaired.
