Novak Djokovic disqualified from 2020 US Open after hitting ball at line judge

Novak Djokovic was defaulted in the fourth round of the 2020 US Open on Sunday after hitting a ball in frustration that struck a line judge on the court at Arthur Ashe Stadium. That line judge was hit in the throat and had to be helped off the court after appearing to have trouble breathing.

Djokovic, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, was disqualified from the tournament. Here are some looks at the incident:

The US Open released this statement shortly after Djokovic was defaulted:

In accordance with the Grand Slam rulebook, following his actions of intentionally hitting a ball dangerously or recklessly within the court, or hitting a ball with negligent disregard of the consequences, the US Open referee defaulted Novak Djokovic from the 2020 US Open. Because he was defaulted, Djokovic will lose all ranking points earned at the US Open and will be fined prize money won at the tournament in addition to any or all fines levied with respect to the offending incident.

The default came after several minutes where Djokovic pleaded his case to tournament officials that he did not intend to hit the line judge. It was the second time he hit a ball in frustration after a point in the first set of his match against Pablo Carreño Busta, and this one came after Busta broke his serve at 5-5. Carreño Busta now moves on to the quarterfinals.

After the match, Carreño Busta told reporters he was stunned by what he saw. "I was in shock, I never expected this moment playing against Novak, he said. "When they [were] talking [at] the net, I just tried to be focused in case we had to continue playing ... I needed to be ready in case we had to continue."

Are they taking a knee at pro tennis matches now?

I was holding out hope for tennis, golf, WWE and the Iditarod.

Joker did not assault or intentionally hit this line judge (as a former multi year club champion and mother of a Midwest ranked and collegiate tennis player) who has watched pro tennis for more years than I want to admit, I have seen thousands of players, after a game, in frustration, hit the ball just like Joker did, to the side of the court for pickup by a ball person, which is exactly what he did out if habit. There wasn’t much pace on that ball, however, the rules are clear. Certainly not as controversial as Serena’s outburst against a lines judge in the USOPEN when she threatened to shove the f—-ing ball down her f—-ing throat and then suggested she could kill her.

This US open has been a joke this year, if you ask me. Every commercial is saturated with blacks. Chris Evert can’t shut up about how wonderful the movement is, John McEnroe when interviewing Wanda Sykes, told her to tell people to vote, BLM masks are on all the faces and their leader, Naomi Osaka, who is Haitian/Japanese and represents Japan. but lives in the USA in a seven million dollar home, referred to the US as GENOCIDAL and “makes her sick on her stomach”. This from a HAITIAN where real genocide occurs everyday. She also stated that tennis is mainly a white sport, which is untrue. Katrina Adams, a black woman has been President of the USTA for years. The Williams sisters have dominated women’s tennis for twenty plus years. There are at least ten current black men and women ranked in the top twenty, so she lies.

My rant is over.

I loved tennis in the old days. This incident is no surprise.

I should have qualified with “currently active in sports.”

But you get my point.

Tennis is as woke and infected with SJW propaganda as any other sport now, or more so.

There are rules to this game. Regardless of whether or not the line judge was seriously hurt, injured, the point is that there are rules to the game, and if a player violates the rules, then they pay the consequences. What is so difficult about that to understand? Djoker screwed up. Literally, he screwed up, unintentionally or otherwise; therefore, he has to pay the penalty. It’s the rules of the game. Folks may not like it, but that’s the way it is.

Arthur Ashe was a noted tennis player who was black. He died from AIDS which he got as the result of a blood donation. The donor was presumably a member of one of the groups which cannot be criticized.

Thank you for your rant. You said a lot of things here that I was not aware of, as I have not tuned in to watch the US open at all this year, primarily because Federer and Nadal are not playing. Sounds like I’m not missing anything.

My daughter, tennis player, had this nasty habit, if she was unhappy about a shot, of saying “cheese and rice”, which always infuriated me and she knew better. She was playing In the Division One, Ohio state high school championships. She was in the quarters and it was close. She missed a shot and screams “cheese and rice”. The chair judge penalized her a point for language, which was a tie breaker point for the match. She lost, her HS coach argued with the judge saying she did not say “JC”. I said, tough luck, off the court. I had warned her many times, her fault and tough lesson.

I challenge you to identify someone in all of sports any more classy than Roger Federer.

1. MLB Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn
2. NHL Hall of Famer Nicklas Lidstrom

100% agree with you on Gil Hodges. Pure class...but is NOT in the MLB Hall Of Fame.

They’ve got instant replay now. The tempers of today’s players are nothing compared to John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Ilie Nastase, et al.

I used to follow tennis just enough that I knew who the stars were. Was in a restaurant today where they had the womens’ Open on TV - saw the list of those still in and realized that I hardly recognized a single name. Sports just doesn’t mean much to me anymore I guess.
