Not positive, but I think this is a fungus. Your local county agent should be able to help.

Meanwhile, you can apply Sevin dust, without any danger to your birds. It also will kill any lice which might infect them.

I CAN see the photo now. I’m going to guess that it’s ‘fowl pox’ or pecking injuries.

Probably some minor virus. I wouldn’t worry much about it. My state made it hard to acquire antibiotics for poultry when they used to be over the counter. Also you may want to try some vitamin supplements.

Just be careful if they say put the antibiotics in the water tanks. We got some that ate the galvanized coating off the metal which causing them to rust.

We clean our pens on weekly basis as well.

Avian Flu? Unlikely to be frostbite given your location.

almost looks like some kind of mite, scale?? Yes Ellendra would have the answer. In the meantime I would wash the comb with peroxide. Bet some of those would pop off.

Fowl pox... comes in two varieties-one that kills by making it difficult for the bird to breathe, the other mild though both are unsightly. The serious kind will cause a lot of mucus that can clog air sacs, etc, and often nasal discharge. This can be alleviated somewhat by adding apple cider vinegar to their water to break up the gunk. The birds will also have a raspy sound when they breathe, and will gape and gasp when in really bad shape.

Since your chicken looks to be in pretty good health other than spots, it probably has the mild form, which will innoculate it from the other kind. You don’t really need to do anything, as the sores will dry to scabs and fall off.

That looks an awful lot like Avian Pox to me. Please contact a vet pronto! You’ll need to vaccinate the entire flock to stop it from spreading.

i have chickens, though my wife handles the day to day more than me..... in my experience, those are mites that cause that.

Could those be small, now dried wounds? ‘Course tho’, I’d expect at least one other bird to have a bit too, if they’ve been pecking @ each other. I’ve seen comb wounds turn pretty black.

We have 6 ISA Browns about 3 months old. They are very friendly & not afraid of me at all, but do fuss at each other a bit. My daughter says a Brown can be a bit pecky to other chickens, tho’ I thought that was as adults...

It’s probably the dry form of fowl pox, a virus they can get from other birds. The black spots will mostly disappear but will leave scars. We had a bunch that went through this and recovered. There is vaccination for it but not after they get it.
