WASHINGTON - The nation's election officials have been warning for months that the sheer volume of ballots sent by mail will delay this year's general election vote count.
But there's another reason results are likely to be later than usual this year: Some states lag in how they handle mailed ballots before the tabulating ever starts.
A mail-in ballot cannot be counted until election officials verify that it was returned by a registered voter. The ballot is in an unmarked envelope, which is mailed inside a larger outer envelope with a place for the voter's name and signature. The name and often the signature must be checked against a voter registration database to verify the ballot's authenticity.
If the ballot isn't signed or the signature doesn't match what's on file, the voter can be contacted to resolve the discrepancy. All of that takes time. Once verified, the ballot itself, inside the unmarked envelope, is set aside until the counting begins.
A timeline from the federal Election Assistance Commission, which was set up after the chaotic 2000 presidential election, notes that states with long experience in handling large volumes of mailed ballots begin to verify them about 20 days before Election Day. In 35 states, the process starts early, and in 12 of those states, election officials can begin checking the validity of mailed ballots as soon as they're received.

STUPID!! Neither side has the MNA POWER to count so many votes correctly....check SIGNATURES, etc.
The Dems have always wanted early voting and early counting so that they could see in realtime where they needed to harvest votes. They hate secret ballots.
The ballot should be considered “spoiled” if the balloting instructions are not followed. If you are too dumb to sign your outer envelope you’re too dumb to vote.
Media: “We could make more clickbait money if we knew those mailed in votes earlier!”
Very well stated
If people voting by mail cant follow instructions, their vote shouldnt count. No examination for intent. No redo. Throw it out.
So what happens if a person votes by mail-in and also shows up at the polls? HOW are they going to be able to check this?
Keep pushing the final count out so the Democrats can cheat. The insanity continues.
I have yet to see a satisfactory answer to this question.
The answer I get is that when a ballot is mailed out, that person's name is marked at the precinct, indicating a ballot was mailed out to them. But all that person has to do is claim they never received it or never sent it out.
Are the precincts going to have the manpower (or desire) to cross-check every mail-in ballot received against the lists of people who came to vote in person?
Just seems like a major cluster to me. People just need to get off their butts for an hour or so and go vote in person. Those who are out of state or country still have the absentee ballot option - which has served us well all these years.
The vote is November 4th. On November 5th no further voting is legal. If the vote cannot be validated by November 5th, it is invalid.
Pretty simple fact that is the 800 pound elephant in the room.
North Carolina starts the presidential election tomorrow. Still find it hard to believe they need two months to vote.
But that’s a fake picture!
(The actual mail-in ballots (from republicans) in Palm Beach County were shredded after opening.)
/sarchasm - That gaping whole between a liberal-progressive-communist democrat and the real world.
So the RATs will not know how many fake votes they have to create in order to win.
In our system absentee ballots are sent out upon request, and the the district voter registration books kept at the polling place are noted "absentee ballot requested". If a voter tries to sign in and absentee is noted, and they claim that they have not voted their absentee ballot, they can not vote on the machine. But they can submit a provisional ballot. That ballot is only counted if the non-vote by absentee is confirmed.
That's for the Democrats. The Republicans vote on November 3rd, to prevent congestion at the polls.
