How Rand Paul became the Trump Whisperer
Axios ^ | Oct 2017 | Stef W. Kight, Jonathan Swan

Posted on 08/27/2020 12:56:48 AM PDT by RandFan

From 2017:

Senior administration officials tell me they think Paul is playing them—that he gets all the perks of associating himself with the president without actually helping advance his agenda.

"We've had this conversation recently," one senior official vented. "It's like, 'Wow, Rand really doesn't help us on anything.'

Why Trump doesn't care: Paul has found the way to Trump's heart. Here's how he does it:

-He spends a lot of time on the phone with him, listening patiently as Trump rattles on about his latest rounds of golf and, per one administration official, "all kinds of random stuff."

-He never asks for anything. Unlike other senators, who asked for tons of money for their states in return for their health care votes, Paul never asked Trump for anything. And he never suggested he would back the final health care bill.

-He plays nice. On TV, he never attacks the president personally or questions his moral center as others do. Instead, Paul couches his opposition in principled terms — bringing it back to deficits or the Constitution.

-He backed the travel ban. And Trump remembers.

The view from Rand World: Gor said his boss "works closely with President Trump on countless issues, including working with him directly for months on expanding AHPs [association health plans], which we believe will happen next week."

"However, proposals originating with congressional leadership to raise taxes on the middle class or pass Obamacare Lite do not fit with Senator Paul's positions nor an America First agenda," Gor said, referring to the health care and tax plans pushed by Trump and GOP leaders.

Gor said: "This perfectly illustrates the disconnect between some White House staff and President Trump. President Trump reaches out to Senator Paul, yet his staff plants fictitious narratives instead of advancing his agenda."

Found this article from 2017 on Rand Paul and President Trump's relationship. Some interesting bits in there about how Trump respects Rand and it appears to be mutual.

I wish Republicans were against ACA, it’s a terrible law. I wish Republicans would oppose Mitch Schumer.

Please remember that without *Sarah Palin’s* endorsement, Rand Paul likely would not have won the 2010 KY Senate primary: which was a 5-way race very heated. And a lot of Republican voters needed reassurance about voting for the son of Ron Paul. Palin’s endorsement shifted the polls in Rand’s favor overnight, catapulting him to the top . She is responsible for the Tea Party wave that helped fend off some of the most extreme elements of the Obama agenda and paved the way for President Trump to take on the GOP establishment to win the nomination for the presidency in 2016.

Just FYI!

I think Bush and the TARP were responsible for the TEA Party wave.

“Senior administration officials tell me.. “

By Jonathan Swan. That is the very first sentence in this ‘story’. This guy Swan is a liar and has been lying probably his whole career, but geez, we’ve been dealing with this same preface to stories every day of the Trump Presidency.

“He spends a lot of time on the phone with him, listening patiently as Trump rattles on about his latest rounds of golf and, per one administration official, “all kinds of random stuff.” “

Yeah, that Trump just rattles on about golf and random stuff, that’s all he does, all the time.

A personal friendship can thrive when there’s not a chance of a hanky panky, transactional, business relationship.

Several factors happened that catapulted Rand from obscure eye surgeon to US Senator.

The TEA Party has always been strong in Kentucky if I remember correctly and Rand gave speeches to large crowds because he was interested in politics.

Then the incumbent senator (Bunning) decided not to run for a 2nd term opening up the seat.

Rand was getting a lot of requests to run. He decided to do it and he was able to raise money due to his famous dad’s network who supported Rand.

This is how he was able to raise the millions needed... Not many have this advantage or could pull it off.

Palin and endorsements came later and were very welcome but they didn’t decide the race. Rand was always going to beat Mitch’s pick as long as he could raise the money... and he did (Thank goodness!).

Trump doesn’t have time to bloviate on the phone about his golf game, Trump works all the time.

I don’t know if I love Rand Paul, maybe it’s worth having him in his senate because he will bring up important things that very few other senators will.

The Tea Party is a quaint memory. Does anyone care about government spending anymore?

Maybe you can explain something to me I don’t understand. I’m thinking if someone assaulted a Senator so badly that a piece of his lung had to be removed. And it was a cold assault it wasn’t even like there was an argument, I assume that person’s going to receive a stiff punishment. Probably worse than he would if he just assaulted his no name neighbor. But somehow Rand Paul’s neighbor assaulted him and ends up getting a slap on the wrist. Not that I think senators are that great, because I honestly don’t, but I think if you assaulted just your generic neighbor so badly part of their lung had to be removed, you’d get longer than a 30-day sentence. Did this get neighbor get virtually get out of jail free card because how is it like in the courts or something? I don’t get it.

Prosecutors appealed the sentence and it was upgraded to 24 months.

I agree though it seems lenient. Many Freepers suggested if it was Schumer assaulted he would have got the maximum (10 years).
