Laura now forecast to be a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) - Hurricane Laura is forecast to rapidly power up into a “catastrophic” Category 4 hurricane, even stronger than previously expected, as it churns toward Texas and Louisiana gathering wind and water that swirls over much of the Gulf of Mexico.

Satellite images show that Laura has become “a formidable hurricane” in recent hours, threatening to smash homes and sink entire communities. It has undergone a remarkable intensification, “and there are no signs it will stop soon,” the National Hurricane Center said in a briefing early Wednesday.

Laura’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 110 mph (175 kph) with higher gusts, forecasters said early Wednesday.

“We are expecting widespread power outages, trees down. Homes and businesses will be damaged,” said Donald Jones, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Lake Charles, Louisiana, which is near the bullseye of Laura’s forecast track.

“I’m telling you, this is going to be a very serious situation,” Jones said.

More than 385,000 residents were told to flee the Texas cities of Beaumont, Galveston and Port Arthur, and another 200,000 were ordered to leave low-lying Calcasieu Parish in southwestern Louisiana, where forecasters said as much as 13 feet (4 meters) of storm surge topped by waves could submerge whole communities.

His dog drowned alone and terrified in a crate while he tried to push his car against the raging waters.
[it smashed through his house and came out the other side, as if the futility of even trying that was lost on him]

All he had to do was gather his family and pets and literally walk 15 feet to higher ground on the road above this mess.

Hated him for that.

My dogs were all leashed and ready to go and the snakes had pillow cases at their houses waiting for them to be tossed into.

Damned if I’m leaving any animal behind.

What really grates me is that his dog took off one day and came across to my yard and I got him back home safely.

I *knew* that dog.

:(

Will they wrap the Biden rallies in Kenosha, Portland, Seattle, etc.?

Nah..it was dirty, filthy, evil coal what done it.

My grandparents lived right up from the coal fired electric plant.

Water came up from the river past that and into their yard a good 500 yards away.

It was crazy.

Tore the hell out of the C&O Canal, nearby.

No clue, and it doesn’t matter.
Biden isn’t POTUS, and he’s a Democrat.
I care about winning the election more than trying to prove some point.

I could see democrat activists sabotaging the New Orleans levies in an attempt to recreate the Katrina press bonanza.

Actually, it will be: No FEMA relief for Laura victims. FEMA money diverted to federal unemployment funding by Trump!

Well, fortunately I’m to the west of it. But Istill expect some heavy rain, probably 50mph winds.

If you look at the first animation below, just as it stops and loops, you’ll see 4 clouds and a lighter one over Texas just west of the Louisiana line, while the animation stops briefly. I’m underneath that lightest cloud on the right.

Right now, it’s partly cloudy, I can see some clear sky, but it won’t last long, expecting it to be overcast again within an hour or so. By the time it gets here it should be slowed down enough it will still be rough, we’ll lose power for a few hours, but I have several kerosene lamps ready and will probably go get a coleman out of the shed.

When it hits the coast, it will be slowed down quite a bit by Port Arthur, Orange and Lake Charles. Then there’s Jasper and Woodville, but mostly small towns other than those. Cameron LA will be wiped out again, it was demolished about 10 years ago, not sure how much they rebuilt.

Going to be rough here but I’ve seen worse, unless the west side decides to spin off some tornadoes. More likely the east side, but possible. Just showed some friends last night pictures I took of a neighbor’s house with a big oak laying on top of her bathroom...about 2 feet diameter where it hit the house. That was 20 years ago, 23 trees down in her back yard.

So we’re not unfamiliar with rough weather, Id o need to go pick up some water, have some but maybe not enough, otherwise all I can do is sit here and wait...
