The German agriculture minister has announced she will introduce a controversial new law that will require dog owners to walk their canine friends at least twice a day, for a total of at least one hour.

The rules would also forbid owners from tying up dogs for long periods of time or leaving them alone all day. Around one in five German homes has a dog; over 9 million dogs are kept as pets in the country.

“Pets are not cuddly toys — and their needs have to be considered,” Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner said Monday. She said her ministry was acting in accordance with “new scientific research about dogs’ needs.”

Dog breeders will also be hit by new legislation: They will only be allowed to keep three female dogs with puppies at any one time. The minimum area and maximum temperature for dogs’ living conditions will also be further regulated. …

It’s not natural to keep snakes like that either. Snakes in the wild are usually never in the same place twice, if they can help it.

What about those of us with back yards? I never “walk” my dogs. I throw the ball for them on my 2 acres. But mostly? They live inside and enjoy life hanging out with their humans!

My Mom had a little poodle mix who lived her entire life in the house or in her small backyard. She was a great dog who was utterly happy. Lived for 14 years. Wasn’t fat.

I could never figure out why people would have a dog house at the back of their yard and a non working dog chained to it.........

They are always on the *wrong* side of the door. It's a Lab thing.

They pretty much have the run of the place.....in-out, in-out, in-out, in-out.... all day/year 'round. I'd have to have a time-clock or counter to see if we were in compliance.

My resident native snakes are always in their usual places.
They have a surprisingly small area of roaming.

That’s how they live.

My Boas, if I were not tending their every need, would be laying around somewhere for days or weeks at a time, waiting for supper to wander by, because that’s what ambush predators do.

If I let them out to exercise, they ramble around a bit and then want to go back to their enclosures.

They like their “dens”.
