Egypt presses on with new capital in the desert amid virus outbreak

The level of activity at the desert site - where trucks rumble down newly built roads and cranes swing over unfinished apartment blocks - reflects the new city's political importance... Known as the New Administrative Capital, it is the biggest of a series of mega-projects championed by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as a source of growth and jobs. Soon after coronavirus began to spread, Sisi postponed moving the first civil servants to the new city and moved back the opening of a national museum adjoining the pyramids to next year. Productivity dipped as companies adapted to health guidelines and some labourers stayed home... after 10 days of slowdown construction had fully resumed at the new capital with a shift system, said Amr Khattab, spokesman for the Housing Ministry, which along with the military owns the company building the city...

Sisi, who publicly quizzes officials responsible for infrastructure projects about timetables and costs, launched the new capital in 2015.

Designed as a high-tech smart city that will house 6.5 million people and relieve congestion in Cairo, it includes government and business districts, a giant park, and a diplomatic quarter as yet unbuilt... The Housing Ministry expects to deliver two residential districts by late 2021, while the business district should be finished by early 2022, said Ahmed al-Araby, deputy head of the new capital's development authority. Private developers and the army are building six other neighbourhoods.

finally came across this one from a couple of weeks ago. well worth watching:

Youtube: 10m05s: 3 Aug: Sky News Australia: Alan Jones: Australians have been filled ‘with fear and alarmism’
The consequences to be inflicted on the personal wellbeing of Australians, business viability, the national economy, and mental health are far beyond what could be described as responsible management of the situation says Sky News host Alan Jones.
“The nation is swimming in debt, kids are out of school, people are locked up while all along the mental anguish of what is taking place is beyond calculation,” Mr Jones said.

On Monday, Premier Daniel Andrews outlined the details of his stage four lockdowns which will affect Metropolitan Melbourne for at least six weeks (increased to ten weeks) in a bid to slow the spread of COVID-19...
Mr Jones discussed the issue with (James Allan) Garrick Professor of Law at the University of Queensland.

I say good for Egypt, mostly because they recognize Israel’s right to exist. With Jordan and now the UAE working with Israel, the mullahs in Iran must be crapping bricks, especially since Oman and Bahrain are leaning towards the same. The mullahs power in Iran is heading towards the end. Just hope they don’t start a shooting war to keep control.

There are different kinds of debt. The ideal kind pays for itself. You build a factory and its operation pays for itself. Over time the debt is paid off and the factory produces a profit. Then there is public debt to build administrative buildings and things that do not pay for themselves. Once this capital is built, you have to staff it, repair it, maintain it, light it, cool it, etc. This is a bad expenditure.

‘ “The question about how rational this is - whether it makes sense economically, whether it is doable, whether it’s the best course of action - this question is not even asked,” Ezzedine Fishere, an Egyptian writer and senior lecturer at Dartmouth College in the United States, said by phone.’

That’s called SOCIALISM

But maybe Covid’s not the reason to cancel - Egypt’s deaths/million is ~50, which is near Wyoming or Alaska-like numbers.

"New Administrative Capital"

Just doesn't have the same historical ring as Cairo, Alexandria or Luxor.

"Caesar and Cleopatra stroll the streets of Alexandria the New Administrative Capital".

Shouldn’t capitol be spelled with an O instead of an A?

If I expected Cairo to be nuked to radioactive slag in the coming war, I’d want to build a new capitol out in the desert, too. Just sayin’.

I like how SuperLuminal thinks. :^) Since this new city is to be powered by photovoltaic arrays (hope you all saw the arrays in one of those vids, huge freakin' bunch of arrays), Harmless Teddy Bear's onto something, name it Amarna.

Capitol is the building, capital is the city where the capitol is located.
