Gregg Popovich is fresh off the worst head coaching season of his career. The San Antonio Spurs finished 2020 with a .451 winning percentage and failed to make the postseason. It marked the first time in 23 years that the franchise missed the playoffs.
The only year in which Popovich ever finished with a worse winning percentage was 1996-97, and that was the season he took over a Spurs team that was without injured center David Robinson.
That same offseason Popovich drafted Tim Duncan. Two years later he would win his first NBA Championship. Over the next two decades, he went on to win four more.
While it is obviously not the sole reason for his troubles, it is hard to ignore the fact that Popovichs issues seem to coincide with his ramped up anti-Trump political talk.

I think he’s been worse since his wife died 1-2 years ago. We loved Pop’s quirkiness, but he has really worn out his welcome since he began this anti-Trump rage of his.
I’m done with the Spurs until that jerk is gone. He got lucky a couple of times with the draft and because of Robinson and Duncan it made him look good. Without those stars he’s being exposed.
Then quit wearing spurs. Oh, never mind...
That said, for a team in rebuild mode and in need of direction, Popovich's obsession with Trump and politics at this time hasn't helped the squad.
Not that I care about the NBA anymore, but Mavs’ coach Rick Carlisle can coach rings around Popovich.
We DON’T want POLITICS in Sports-just coach, Pop...NBA lost me awhile back, but I cannot watch when Black Lives Matter is in huge letters across the court. What will they do when fans like me refuse to watch or go see games or spend money on sports memorabilia. My husband is a teacher who is working thru this COVID and he would MUCH rather be in the classroom teaching LIVE, and they aren’t paying him anymore to learn all the technology (and he is NOT a tech guy).. Now, he works for GREAT HEARTS Charter in North Phoenix, so they have good standards and are going back in person on or about September 1. So, I have no sympathy for any sports person making millions and then kneeling during the playing of our National Anthem. I am beyond Disgusted!
Mark Cuban it is pure jealousy from him toward Trump.
That’s because Trump is a genius...book-wise and street-wise.
He WILL WIN.
He’s too much smarter than everyone else.
I would have never said that even 6 months ago.
But he just keeps nailing people to the wall and driving them crazy. I love it
I used to be a big Spurs fan for years while I lived in San Antonio. I remember the day he was hired I went to the weekly Spurs radio show at the local bar in SA to meet him and see what he was about.
Pop has more craters on his face than the moon. The reason he has that beard is to cover those deep ravines.
I left being a Spurs fan several years ago and I have also stopped supporting all professional sports as well.
No clicks, updates, or tv\radio for any major sports. My landscape has never looked better.
Ah, the Michael Jordan/Phil Jackson Effect. The coach gets the credit for the talents of the player. The Spurs would have done just as well with any number of other coaches.
Any sport that is a total waste for the first 98% of the game and is decided in the final 2% is awful.
Maybe he should fire himself and bring back Bob Hill, the exact opposite of what he did right after they got Robinson in the draft...
RE: Gregg Popovichs Spurs Have Struggled Since He Became Anti-Trump
I don’t agree with Popovich’s politics, but his team’s struggling and his politics has nothing to do with each other, unless he is only choosing anti-Trump players regardless of character and skill.
Hope you’re right but I fear you could be wrong.
I agree all the way. He is a major problem solver. And he love verbally punching people in the face.
My Dad used to say to skip the first three quarters and watch the last 5 minutes.
Oh don’t tell me Pop-off-bytch is getting grief from this.....I’m loving this and Cuban can ESAD too.....
