Amazon is gauging how employees feel about moving away from the company's Seattle campus, largely because of the Covid-19 pandemic and Seattles new payroll tax.
Amazon sent an email to workers asking if theyd be willing to work in Seattles suburbs and outlying areas, including Redmond and Tacoma. The story was reported by Bloomberg on Friday.

Amazon employs about 50,000 workers at its Seattle headquarters, which includes more than 40 buildings - including the companys landmark, greenhouse-like glass Spheres - sprawling across several blocks.

Amazon has had a rocky relationship with the Seattle City Council since at least 2018 when councilwoman Kshama Sawant proposed a head tax on large salaries in the city to pay for homelessness and affordable housing. Sawant called it the Amazon Tax.
Later that year, the council initially passed a tax of $275 per employee on Seattle businesses pulling in more than $20 million a year. Amazon halted construction on one of its downtown Seattle towers as debate over that tax intensified, and a backlash against the levy quickly gained strength. The council ultimately backpedaled and voted to repeal the tax in June 2018, less than a month after it was passed.

Sawant revived her Tax Amazon campaign earlier this year and proposals to tax the payrolls of large companies to pay for affordable and green housing were floated in both the city council and in Olympia.
Last month, the Seattle City Council approved a new tax on the citys largest employers, levying the payrolls of employees making at least $150,000 a year. Its estimated the tax will raise more than $200 (million) each year.

No problem. An exit tax will fix the deficit
I will gladly deliver my property to them at 2700 feet per second and 147 grains at a time.
This BS must end. The left is raging, rioting, burning, pillaging and worse. The right is keeping it powder dry but we grow restless. When and if law and order truly breaks down outside of the insane cities such as Portland, the right will kill in defense of our great nation, our laws, and our sacred constitution from which made our nation great. To die for the constitution is a noble act, but it is far better for the enemy of the constitution to die.
Redmond, Bellevue and other areas in Eastern King County are almost TOTALLY Indian-controlled and dominated. Googles Indian workforce would fit right in.
Moving out of Seattle..OOPS!
Oops Amazons Indian workforce, not Google. Although in reality, its then same. Posting angry does that.
Actually liberals are extremely stingy. There are several studies documenting that the most generous people are conservatives. Even in cases like giving blood. Because of being stingy, they will not help fellow man directly, but they will work hard to force everybody else to help that fellow man! That is the essence of liberalism. Newest example - Kamala Harris gave NO money for charities on her last tax return available.
Seattle was hostile to Boeing too. I don’t understand this extreme stupidity of biting the hand that feeds them.
During the passing of Obamacare - many Churches supported the law. They did not want to spend money helping the people, they wanted the collection plate dollars for their salaries and fancy houses.
They are building another office right across the street from Expedia. Construction on that building has completely stalled out. The exterior is finished, but very little progress on the interior that I can see from the street.
A very large building is under construction just two blocks from Expedia, directly in front of the Bellevue Transit Center. I do not know the owner, but I assume it's Amazon, because they own another large piece of land on the north side of the Transit Center.
If all these buildings really do belong to Amazon, their political and business confidence in Bellevue and Washington state is badly misplaced.
Bellevue - which is 40% foreign born - voted 30% for a Socialist Congressional candidate in 2018!
Washington state has no income tax. But, after the COVID Recession, it is just a matter of time before state government - massively Democrat - will start to tax the wealthy, then the affluent, and eventually everyone.
That’s why Boeing built the plant in South Carolina. And to avoid the unions. Boeing management isn’t terribly smart, after all they did move their headquarters to Shitcago, BUT they did recognize that sooner or later Seattle would become untenable as a manufacturing location. Look for them to move a majority of their manufacturing to SC in the next 5 years.
Bellevue - which is 40% foreign born - voted 30% for a Socialist Congressional candidate in 2018!
Be clear, its a majority filthy Indian (and a few Communist Chinese) H1B trash.
The Bellevue Social Security Office is always full of Indians getting benefits fir their parents - who never worked a day in their pathetic lives in the US. Bellevue really are dangerous with throngs of foreign trash Indians driving like they are back home in India.
The Fred Meyer area in Bellevue near Bel-Red Road is overrun by Indians and Indian halal food places. Same with other Bellevue malls near the border of Redmond. Mostly Indian.
Indians are socialist, they bring that from their home country.
Hell, about three quarters of the Seattle rioters will be out of their day jobs!!!!!
Won’t happen. Bezos doesn’t care about his people.
Just dont move them to Idaho, Portland might be nice!!!
They should leave the state.
There is a story about a boy and a wolf. The boy quickly found out that after bluffing several times no one listened to him anymore. Bezos needs to pay attention to that fable.
However as a lifelong bookkeeper/accounting person I would have advised him long before new & the moving trucks would hve been there more than a month ago.”
I always thought that it was some kind of false pride that caused Bezos who started Amazon in south King County where there is a lot of land to install his business in downtown Seattle.
Gates has his many faults but at least he picked a big empty area where he had room to spread out.
If Amazon really wanted their employees to move out, they’d simply tell them that all the $$ for their bonus this year have been paid on Seattle’s payroll tax. And as long as they stay in Seattle, that’ll continue to happen.
No income tax in Florida... Why should they just move 20 miles away?
