The Maine Marine Patrol says they are investigating the death of a woman Monday afternoon near Bailey Island. According to Marine Patrol and NEWS CENTER Maine who spoke with witnesses at the scene, a woman was swimming off the shore near While Sails Lane when she was injured in what appeared to be a shark attack.
Marine Patrol says the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and no other information is available at this time, Marine Patrol says.

RIP to the lady who died. The description from the newscaster said she was flung up out of the water. My money is on a LARGE white shark, with the strength to do that. That’s what they do to seals, when attacking from below. I hope she did not suffer :(
My shark biologist friend told me earlier tonight that the FATAL attack was not to far from the recent seal bitten carcass that washed up yesterday. -The seal had a shark bite radius indicting a good sized white shark. -Tom

I’ve dove in pretty cold water in a wet suit. Mine was 1/4” thick and black. Reckon I looked lik a seal? Wonder how old she was, what she was doing, and wish her family well. RIP.
I used to live around there, and can remember in the summertime seeing large schools of seals of Fort Popham.

Apparently she was swimming with another woman when the shark came up and drove her out of the water.
To get more details we will have to wait until the relatives are notified.
Since someone was next to her in the water, and there was an eyewitness from shore the story should be accurate when it emerges. - Tom
Yes I’m sure that’s true. Diving you’re suited up and wearing a tank and stuff. Fluttering around swimming like a surface water bass plug or a seal well things change. If large mouth bass were 9’ long or bug spray smelled like elk blood more crap would happen in farm ponds and the Rockies, it’s still a shame. We all live in a crap game. Some times diamonds, some times snake eyes.

The water in New England & in ME is “too damned cold” for this Southern boy 12 months a year.

Most likely Great White. Tigers are a warm water shark(Hawaii).
Bull sharks have never been seen north of NJ. Again, the water is too cold.
