Yes, they often swim from down below straight up with great speed and they and their prey are flung out of the water on the strike ...
Makos primarily operate like giant bluefish, and are tail section choppers.
A mako will grab another shark or tuna or swordfish, in the tapered body section just before the tail and lock on until that section is cut off, and the target immobilized
The way this woman was attacked from below and driven up out of the water, suggests more than likely it was a white.
No shortage of whites in New Englnd now, since their food source the seals, and the whites are Federally protected. -Tom
I did my open water dive certification at Kettle Cove Maine in January many years ago. It was so cold I stayed in my wet suit in my car and undressed in the shower:)
This should be in the news shortly with much more detail.-Tom
Thank you for the update. Terrible way to go.

At a news conference at noon, officials confirmed that Holowach was attacked by a great white shark.
Bangor Daily News-UPDATE:

And right now, on Cape Cod:

So sharks get a two hour lunch?
Ugh. That poor woman.
Tom? Kinda off topic but curiosity wonders, seals, great whites, and cold water. Ever see killer whales cruising the areas around there? I figured if the attack was from underneath and the shark breached it was a white from what Ive read and the videos Ive seen. Damn shame I feel bad for the ladies family. Regards.
Not Often, but I have seen Orcas in Mass. waters, but only one or two together.
Their very large dorsal is easily recognizable. -Tom
Maine officials are warning about that area- Tom
Two coastal state parks, Popham and Reid, are not allowing swimmers beyond waist deep water, state officials said.
Thanks for the info. Lots of feed and opportunities had me wondering. Theyre like a black and white police cruiser maybe a few in the area might calm things down a little. Then again maybe not.
INTERESTING. - There have NO details posted (that I have seen) on “the manner of attack”.
What you posted certainly sounds like a GW attack.

(Typical of the so-called “mainstream media”, the reports on radio/tv & in the print media have been MOSTLY comments about how very savage, though unusual, that shark attacks are.)
What you posted about the this fatal attack certainly sounds like an “ambush attack” by a GW.
