The trope of “just shut up and wear a mask” is not science, ordered liberty, or constitutional governance. It’s what they do in North Korea. We need real debate on the effectiveness of masks, the type of masks, the situations in which they are worn, the duration of time, the benchmarks that need to be met to measure effectiveness, and the process for promulgating these rules. We are no longer 24 hours into an emergency. We are four months into this virus, and it’s time to function like the representative republic that we are.

There are numerous political and scientific questions any thinking person should be asking at this point:

Barring something sudden and unexpected, such as a vaccine coming out in the next 2 months or the virus just disappearing, masking is here til at least sometime next year.
Governments could change their rules, but they’ll still be required for commercial interactions. More and more business are telling people they gotta mask up.
Be interesting to see if how masking is handled if schools are open for in-person learning.

Interesting post, but one thing was missed - the profiteering angle. A lot of connected people are raking in piles of cash selling masks and related stuff directly or by contracts. The longer it can drag on, the more money they'll make.

Entirely agree. And if you think this mask madness is destructive to adults, can you imagine what it’s doing to children, who are forced to skulk around feeling as if they are a mortal threat to everyone around them - and as if everyone around them is a mortal threat to them? They can’t play with other kids, run around being silly, enjoy life the way a child should. When I see kids trudging along in their masks, I just want to cry.

Most people don't understand large numbers; their minds just default to something familiar. Same goes for what they can't see (small numbers, i.e. 120 nanometer SARS-CoV-2). Radiation, too.

So...about the "science": If it's physically-impossible to block a virus - see images below - then it's not about the "science".

The size of corona virus is 125 nanometers, that is 125 one billionths of a millimeter. No mask can prevent transmission on that scale.

True, but virus particles aren't just freefloating around. An infected person is generally shedding them in their breath/saliva. N95 masks are rated to stop 95% of particles .3microns or larger, and from testing they're generally that effective down to .1 to .2 microns. (Note 1 micron = 1 micrometer = 1000 nanometers.) Most of your aerosolized droplets in your breath are .1-.5 microns, with many larger droplets as well.

I have the full data somewhere in a week-old post. But most N95 masks (the white round dust masks you get for sanding/dust) will stop a good portion of the virus, although plenty is still getting through and more than enough to infect someone. BUT if they aren't fitted/fully sealed, any air leakage drops their effectiveness down to 20-30%. Likewise, when "mask required" is satisfied by a bandanna or scarf, you are getting almost no protection - all those stop is snot and spit if someone coughs or sneezes.

An N95 is only good for a few minutes. It becomes useless when wet by breath vapor. You can’t wear all day, stuff it in your pocket and wear it again.

Making a fashion statement instead of a functional, effective barrier.

They are less than worthless. They are useless against the submicroscopic virus.
