If you had to pick only ONE great band or musical group of the past 50 years who would it be?

Posted on 07/10/2020 8:18:42 PM PDT by Bigtigermike

I love all kinds of music and I know everyone’s taste of music is different but if forced to pick only one group since 1970 that was awesome, encompassed uniqueness and range and just fun music overall it would be Earth Wind & Fire. I just loved how they mixed R&B, Jazz, Soul, Pop, Latin and Disco and had lyrics to many of their songs that had meaning and message. Maurice White was a genius and his instrumental arrangements for the bands top hits was bar none. Great Car music

‘That’s the Way of the World’ ‘

Fantasy’

‘Reasons’

Getaway’

‘After the Love is Gone’

‘Serpentine Fire’

‘Shining Star’

‘Can’t hide Love’

Boogie Wonderland’

‘Gratitude’....etc

Ha! Well I did say if you had to pick only one. Of course, there are many great bands expanding many decades. Just trying to see if push comes to shove who would you narrow it down to

I agree that the Stones were the better rock band, but I’m not sure that the Beatles were the more talented musicians. McCartney is talented and Harrison was pretty good, but Lennon and Ringo weren’t great musicians. I would say that the Beatles were the more talented songwriters, at least in their prime, and considering what they were able to do in the studio with George Martin, were more revolutionary.

Amazing that the list got this far and nobody mentioned Elton John. His songbook is so memorable.

In terms of musicianship I would have to rate Earth, Wind, and Fire as my top pick but I listen to The Eagles, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and even Survivor (When Seconds Count), and Journey when I’m looking to rock out.

I lost interest in rock somewhere in the 1980’s and switched to jazz when the pop music business discovered heavy metal, boy bands, grunge, and rap.

Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays are literally their own category closer to jazz and way beyond pop.

True. Never limit yourself. Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of good music has no boundaries. IMNSHO. Genres? We don’t need no stinking genres. Good is good.

The best live band, The Who early 70s, hands down.

Perhaps a similar thread topic is individual albums. Boston’s first album still holds up after all these years. Appetite for Destruction was a juggernaut. And someone already mentioned Dark Side of the moon.

:)

you can’t narrow it down to only one, is my answer. there’s no one band that has such a monopoly on greatness to the point you’d say they were the greatest over 50 years.

there are too many great ones, that’s why, great in their own particular ways, styles and songs.

Those first few notes of "San Lorenzo" changed my life. Too bad Pat couldn't keep the original lineup intact for longer. When Mark Egan left, there was definitely something missing.

“Operator, give me Jesus on the line”

Saw them in Jerusalem 1984. B. B. King was the opener. Crowd loved them!

Agreed the question is ridiculous but my contribution is Lynrd Skynrd...not the hits. Four Walls of Raiford is incredible. Simple Man, Ballad of Curtis Lowe, Mr Banker, Swamp Music...short caeeer vut some of the finest rock ever produced.

The Beatles. But the only two artists who have composed music that I have enjoyed MORE than the Beatles are Al Stewart and Harry Chapin.

This may make a few eyes roll, but I’m going with the REAL fab four:

Ace, Gene, Peter and Paul.

That’s right, KISS.

Four boys from NYC who worked hard, followed their dreams, and ended up multi millionaires.

Not the greatest artistes, but man, they put on a show and proved that hard work and determination could propel you to stratospheric heights.

Feel free to disagree, of course. But I have loved them since 1977.

Rock on, Freepers.
