A day after the Ivy League announced the cancellation of its fall sports, another one of the league’s eight members is eliminating its men’s and women’s golf programs.

Dartmouth revealed Thursday that it will cut five sports in all while also permanently closing the school’s golf course, Hanover Country Club. The move, which follows a similar decision by Brown in May, is expected to save the university, which is facing a projected $150 million institutional budget deficit, about $2 million, according to a statement released by Dartmouth president Philip Hanlon.

Dartmouth has an almost $6 billion endowment. Plenty of money for Diversity Commissars not one cent for golf.

The PGA tour is in its fourth week of playing tournaments since the shutdown. Maybe this is against the wishes of those who want the country to stay shut down.

Saving $2M w/a $150M deficit....to end a sports program that’s outdoors.

What, it just isn’t diverse enough...like basketball and football?

COVID 19 is the excuse left-wing faculty members have been looking for for years: a reason to eliminate most if not all intercollegiate athletics.

Yep, they won’t be hurting as much as some colleges.

This points to a developing tsunami which is going to hit colleges and universities, namely, the drop in income.

Some students and parents, will balk at attending an online only university, and pay tens of thousands of dollars for it, even if it is an Ivy League university.

And what of the college campuses, with big numbers of buildings and grounds and ongoing maintenance needed, but with less income coming in, to pay for all of that?

I’ve heard that record numbers of incoming freshmen are doing a “gap year” this year, and will not start college as scheduled, because of the uncertainties of what’s going to happen.

Suppose colleges lose 20-25% of their students this year. That’s a 20-25% deduction in revenue.

We may not think about it much, but all these colleges and universities, even state supported ones, are business entities, which have to balance their budgets. A big decline in income spells trouble.

And the problem with golf is? It’s not like golf requires close contact.

I just won a bunch of money on C. morikawa from yesterday and today. Game currently suspended due to weather

Dont know anything about golf but pool my info resources and have been winning money on it. Dont even watch it. Too boring for me. I dont know how this comes together to pick a round leader or total winner...but its working. I am really very amazed.

I do like Benny an’s sense of humor. He engraved a club after this song

I feel for the athletes of any sport...yes...even the NBA and NFL.
they train their whole life for something...and then COVID comes long and smashes their hopes and dreams

Okay.. I dont feel too sorry for SOME in the NBA AND NFL..but in general

I especially feel sorry for Olympians in the sports that have no Pro money involved. They only get their chance once every four years.

Correct. In fact, we may see an explosion in the rise of a lot more people trained in trades skills. Why? Because COVID-19 may end up slowing international goods trade, putting more emphasis on domestically-produced goods, which means a lot more demand for people trained in woodworking, metalworking, electrical work and other trade skills.

Then you have a bunch of college kids who were hoping to go professional. They have worked. Scrimped. Saved. Gave Sweat blood and tears for years.

And now what.

The torture that gymnastic people go through in their young lives is really something to hear...just from US. Cant imagine what it is like in China or Russia

Hopefully, this all rights itself soon.

This is just enrollment. One area which is barely mentioned is the special event business at a lot of schools. They rent out spaces to the public or local alumni. I have been to many a wedding at the chapel on a local campus. Performing arts centers bring in outside performers to hold plays, concerts, speaking engagements.

That is a nice side hustle many schools have lost for the time being.
