Donald Trump fails to 'fully appreciate' the office of US president [says Bolton]

Four months before the next US presidential election, Donald Trump’s poll numbers are in a slump. Disaffected conservatives call him incompetent and are campaigning against the Republican president, citing the upward curve of new coronavirus cases in the US, the millions of unemployed Americans, and the protests and racial tension in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. They echo Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who says Trump’s leadership is inadequate.

One of his three former national security advisors, John Bolton, joined DW’s Tim Sebastian to discuss his impressions of President Trump on Conflict Zone. […]

Bolton characterizes White House infighting as part of Trump’s managerial style. “I think that Trump is very mistrustful of not only the bureaucracy as a whole, but even his own staff.”

“He still hasn’t fully appreciated what it means to be president of the United States,” Bolton added.

When asked about Trump’s admiration of dictators, Bolton demurred: “I’m not a shrink, I don’t psychoanalyze people.”

But he did offer this: “Trump, in a sense, envied the Xi Jinpings and the Vladimir Putins. He liked talking to ‘big guys.’ You know, ‘big guys’ get together and they do ‘big guy’ things. I think it was that simplistic.” […]

Was obstruction of justice a way of life by Trump as Bolton writes in his book? “I am not a prosecutor,” Bolton said, but added he had reported questionable decisions to the attorney general and White House legal counsel.

Bolton said fewer US officials are now prepared to disagree with Trump. “The number of people in inside the government who were willing to challenge Trump on a number of these issues has diminished over time.” …

Not to mention that they weren’t conservatives to begin with, but lied about being such to get elected or appointed or whatever.

Didn’t Bolton used to be somebody?

In his own mind.

He'll be making money as keynote speaker on the Never-Trumpers' lectures circuit.

Take note of his future speaking engagements to identify the Never-Trumpers.

I read an article that revealed he was out of favor during the Bush administration within two years. And after trying to get Trump to start WW3 and WW4 he has basically burned his bridges with both ends of the party. That’s why this book is so important to him because it’s all downhill for for him from here at age 71.

Yep. I have to laugh when they claim Jennifer Rubin, Bill Kristol, and her ilk are Conservative. None of them have been Conservative in their life.

Like most experts, Bolton has an instinctive disregard, even contempt, for those who are not also experts and who do not fully share his views. Foolishly, Bolton acted that way toward the President, forgetting that Trump was the boss because he had been elected, not Bolton.

Never mind George Will. The man has been a left-winger all his life; but just because a mid-80s Washington Post article insisted that he started shifting right after visiting East Berlin sometime during the 60s, he got branded “conservative”.

"...that he started shifting right after visiting East Berlin sometime during the 60s, he got branded 'conservative.' "

And the left-wing media has gotten away with mis-labeling these people as Conservatives. According to them, as a 72 year old very Conservative white woman, they'd label me a white supremacist.

Just noticed that Bolton talked about Trump’s distrust of “the bureaucracy” . . . as if the bureaucracy is actually a good thing, implied in context. Quite amazing.

Anyone who upholds anything American gets transformed into a “white supremacist” by the left’s standards now. War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength, bureaucracy is limited government, 2 + 2 = 5, ad nauseam . . .

Bolton is just another person who we likely never would have heard of if not for the opportunity government gives to narcissists.

This accusation of his is ludicrous, considering that recent past Presidents have sold nights in the Lincoln bedroom, had oral sex in the Oval Office and pantry, repeatedly hosted ‘entertainers’ and sports stars at the White House, plotted against an incoming duly elected President (essentially treason) from the White House, and even stole silverware on the way out the door.

And after trying to get Trump to start WW3 and WW4

Actually Bolton and his ilk want no part of a real war, which means a conflict with a start and some sort of conclusive ending event. What they seek are ‘conflicts’ which are actions indefinite in length, infinite in various modalities (nation building, infrastructure restoration and upgrade, institutional reform, etc.) that have no established end dates and no definable conditions of successful conclusion. The goal is not to fight but create an interminable conflict situation in which US forces have no real idea what they are trying to accomplish and the permanent government and K Street keep dreaming up new opportunities for promotion, enrichment and profit for the insider corporations.

Bolton doesn’t ‘fully appreciate’ the office of US president, that we know is true.

Stick to the facts you know, and you will discover the truth of matters.

Who said this now? Is that the guy who looks like scaramucci with a walrus mustache? Who cares what he says? He had his 15 minutes - made a fool of himself - now it’s Mary Trump’s 15 minutes to make a fool of herself.
