Age-related heart disease linked to gut bacteria metabolite
News Atlas ^ | 30 June 2020 | Rich Haridy

A number of studies have linked TMAO to heart disease, however, until now it hasn’t been clear exactly how this metabolite causes cardiovascular damage. A robust new study, published in the journal Hypertension, is offering one of the first thorough mechanistic investigations illustrating how TMAO damages the cardiovascular system.

“Our work shows for the first time that not only is this compound directly impairing artery function, it may also help explain the damage to the cardiovascular system that naturally occurs with age,” says Vienna Brunt, first author on the new study.

I’ve not tried any supplements - this is just my anecdotal experience. I would think that as long as they have live active cultures it should be worth a try. I sometimes only eat yogurt once a week.

I also limited my consecutive red meat intake (e.g. if I have a burger at lunch and a steak for dinner I’ll not have any the next day). I first tried activia but when I got tired of all the sweetness of it I changed over to plain yogurt. I avoid the ‘plain yogurt’ varieties which are really ‘sugar flavored’ as they have added sugar.

I’m alive and people far far better than me have died. Why? Probably shouldn’t think too hard about that one.

I went home early from work and stopped by my local clinic’s walk-in thinking I had a bad case of ‘heartburn’.

After some x-rays and a ultrasound the doc said, “Sir, you have to go to the hospital NOW! not later, NOW!”

Luckily, the ER is right across the street from the clinic.

They admitted me right away and scheduled me for surgery ASAP..............

You don’t have to eat yogurt to get the good bacteria as dairy isn’t the only food that is fermented. Sauerkraut, kombucha, pickles are all fermented options. Check the natural food section to get kombucha (tea beverage) or sauerkraut and pickles that are made the old fashioned way by fermentation rather than with vinegar to get the tang.

There are many different cultures of yogurt.
IIRC the FDA requires all commercial yogurt to be made from a similar culture to be labeled as yogurt.

Kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut... some beers, most fermented foods. All different cultures sometimes different side effects.
As with most ethnic foods, every village has different variations. Some kimchi, I cannot stand, but love my homemade version.
See #19.

A friend with a similar experience is now on the heart attack diet.
I ask what that consisted of, he said, if it tastes good, SPIT IT OUT.

MMC (mainstream medical community) is quick to prescribe antacids

Not all, my Physician might be a bit different and an office visit can take an hour, yes 60 minutes or more.

This is my guy:

Long and not a great speaker, but I follow his message to keep my gut and stones happy.

I am not sure what that is- but I probably should have made it clear it is modern processed, bleached, chemical-added flour that gave me the most problem. I even wondered if it was the ROUNDUP they began using to increase wheat yield, because when I was younger I ate wheat and bread all my life.

I’ve been experimenting with Einkorn flour that I grind myself- and yesterday made two delicious hamburger buns, and had no issues that I could tell. It’s just a real pain to work with. Still trying to figure it out.

If I eat modern flour products I blow up like a balloon immediately and sometimes get joint pain so bad I can barely walk.

It’s so much easier just to stick to paleo diet - meat and veggies and fruit. You would think eating a nice steak every day would be expensive- but I eat so much less because I am barely hungry. When I was eating flour I was starving constantly, and eating all day every day.
Now I sometimes forget if I’ve eaten all day.

LOL I had to google that- yeah I avoid wheats of all kinds, but I have very little experience to pass on with beers

Corona beer is supposed to be ‘gluten free’ so I’ve stuck to that.

And that right there is the problem with the study.

And the problem is?

Backing up prior research findings, the study affirmed dimethyl butanol, a compound found in olive oils and red wine, blocked the gut bacteria production of TMA.

Drink red wine with your cheeseburger, or dunk it in olive oil!

Mostly a teetotaler, but not adverse to a small glass on occasion.

Use and enjoy EVO, but suspect it unlikely that dunking my cheeseburger in it would be a flavor enhancement?

I know of some that use very lean beef and add butter and or suet is that OK?

You might check out a product called Bio Salud:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/El-Viajero-Bio-Salud-Original-Cultured-Dairy-Beverage-2-1-Fl-Oz-6-Count/43285889

It’s a cultured dairy drink packaged in little 2.1 oz. “shots”. Very tasty in a non-yogurty way. Sold at Walmart in the yogurt aisle — 99 cents for a six pack. Dannon makes a similar product but it’s much more expensive.

No, I was kidding about dunking it in olive oil. Butter is ok. It does not harm you in moderation.

DuPage County, Il.

He is my gastro guy, about COVID, he said to stay out of crowds, wash hands often and avoid hospitals.

That said, he told me his wife and son were going out to celebrate a favorite restaurant reopening.
He could not talk them out of it, but would not go with them.

I suspected as much.
But do know some that add EVO to their burgers.
