For several days last week, workers dismantled the 75-foot Confederate statue that has stood on the state Capitol grounds for 125 years.
Monday, as crews removed the base to finish the job, they unearthed a time capsule of sorts underneath the rubble.
The capsule was placed there when the monument was erected in 1894, said Michele Walker, public information officer for the N.C. Department of Cultural and Resources, in an interview with The News & Observer.
Gov. Roy Cooper ordered the statues removal, along with the removal of two other Confederate monuments on Capitol grounds. The governor cited public safety in issuing his order June 20, hours after protesters toppled two bronze statues of soldiers from the base of the tallest Confederate statue.
**SNIP**
The capsule was not opened at the site but instead will be opened later this week in a lab setting so it can be documented, Walker said. The capsule was very rusty, she said.
We dont know how well anything survived the elements, Walker said.

Gropin' Joe's last good rally?
The message will read ...
“If you are reading this your society has decayed beyond recovery. Put that statue back up !!”
From my recollection with time capsules, most of the time, whoever was responsible for the time capsule didn’t understand issues with long term caching. The capsule failed and the contents were ruined.
You got it! I was thinking something like that as well.
“The capsule failed and the contents were ruined”
That’s my expectation on Oak Island. Mostly because people kept drilling holes in any containment.
btt
Bet it has a noose, confederate flag and klan hood in it.
This is a tragedy and Freepers are making jokes....
And Democrat campaign buttons
I wholeheartedly agree. This is wrong, wrong and wrong. The Monument removal thing must STOP! It is our common heritage.
Probably another ‘lost’ box full of Hillary votes
I suppose whatever is in the capsule needs to be considered racist and destroyed without being opened./s
Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal
If anyone has a grievance it is White Southerners. We have been villified, disrespected, and had our culture attacked since 1865.
On the other hand, Black Southerners have been mollycoddled and getting "gubmint pogrums" and trillions of dollars in benefits for decades, and yet they think they are persecuted. Any black person who does the same things as successful white people will become successful themselves. And there are countless examples of successful Blacks.
Success means having a roof over your head, a working car in the driveway, good health, substance free, a moral lifestyle, food on the table, minimal debt, emergency funds in the bank, and a regular paycheck.
It’s similar to gallows humor.
You would go mad without a release valve.
It is so weird.. recently, every-time I mention something, watch something, or do something, within 2 days, something politically related comes up.
Just last night I watched that Nicolas Cage starred in about the time capsule that was buried 50 years prior “Knowing” (2009)...
I always thought erecting a statue was generally a waste of time. Not a political commentjust the fact that 50 years later no one remembers the person, and no one cares.
Generic monuments to war dead with names seem to be a better way for people to remember.
Statues that no one cared about, except the pigeons and the people that ate lunch there, are causing all this uproar. Its just silly.
The only thing that bothers me is the pure art of the sculpted figure is being destroyed.
And...no one should just tear stuff down without the proper steps being taken. But replacing them? Not on my dime.
On point.
There were 40,000 war dead from North Carolina commemorated by an obelisk in front of the state capitol building wherein politicians decided to secede and wherein politicians decided to press war and wherein politicians decided to call up the young men of the state to fight.
The politicians and capitol building are still there, but the monument to the dead has been removed, illegally.
