What state do you live in, or would you rather not say?

There are many good AR’s that are very economical. A good, local gun store should be able to help you.

Whatever you decide to buy, make sure you join a good rifle club and shoot it often, at least twice a month. Become familiar with it so you can handle it safely and shoot it accurately.

Seriously -

I programmed these for the owner, a former Navy SEAL sniper wh runs the place and although he’s not the cheapest, his are the highest quality you could ever ask for.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ..... Ford vs Chevy vs Dodge...

In all seriousness, for the money, Palmetto State Armory makes one of the better rifles out there. Good luck getting one, though. I was in the store recently and the guy at the counter told me that as soon as they put them on the wall, they’re gone.

If your friend wants to spend a little more for a quality weapon take a look at Sionics Weapons Systems out of Tuscon, Arizona. Small company. Fantastic rifles. Supply law enforcement agencies, big and small, all over the country. They’re not the cheapest out there, but they’re definitely not the high end stuff that doesn’t shoot any better than anything else.

My 2cents

I know a lot of folks will say a 20" barrel is too long for swinging around in CQC, but if you've let the feral get that close, then you've already made a big mistake. I prefer to place shots accurately at a longer distance than the can the foe.

I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 16" barrel. And a high quality scope, BLOAT, and practice, practice practice. I assume you're not going house to house hunting bad guys in close quarters. The idea is to keep bad guys far away.

7:1 twist seems to work well also, depending on the ammunition you want to shoot.

.223 / 5.56 caliber is the most popular chambering for the AR platform but you might want to consider the 7.62x39. That is the chambering usually found in the AK 47. Larger heavier bullet. More effective out to 300 meters or so. Ammo is cheap and easy to find.

Any good brand such as Ruger, S&W, Delton, Wyndam Arms, Bushmaster.

You might want to check Armslist for your area as the gun shops may be out.

Rural King and Dunham Sports usually have good deals.

You do realize that you are way, way behind the curve?

"There's a Hurricane making landfall near me. Where's the best place to buy shelf stable food, bottled water, and a generator? (Vanity)"

Before February you had lots of choices, and we could have made several recommendations depending on your budget, experience level, intended uses, and your home state's laws.

But right now, today, if you really want an AR, grab the first one you see, and pay the outrageous price. If you can even find one.

Palmetto State Armory is down to only one PSA brand AR-15 in 5.56, so today that is your only choice. If you're mechanically inclined, you can buy a rifle kit from PSA that includes a fully assembled upper, a lower parts kit, and then buy a stripped lower. Then your options open up a bit. Only the stripped lower receiver would have to be transferred through your local FFL, the rest of the kit can be shipped to your door.

Then there is the matter of ammunition, red dot sight or scope, and ammunition.

Good luck, we're all counting on you...
