There is something for Greta Van Scoldilocks to smile about, the potential for using less energy and saving the planet.

Had a house where the electricity went out almost every storm.

We had a generator cuz we had well water but before that filled up the tubs for every bad storm and had water in storage.

Lasted once a week and a half with no power. Not fun.

This is a load of crap because my local electric company is an “essential business” and is currently hiring. More linemen = faster repairs.

I think the only logical thing to do is to take all of these workers that would be cleaning up after a hurricane and restoring electricity and put them all in Quarantine in some sort of air-lock so they have NO risk of exposure to any kind of illness or accidental injuries. That way they’ll be ready to go when we need them after a storm!

I mean, that makes as much SENSE as anything these days, Right?

My Dad has a Generac. I am guessing he has had it at least 5 to 7 yrs now, maybe longer? He lives in a ranch house, about 1800 sq ft....the Generac powers his heat/AC, most all his lights, fridge, freezer, TV’s. He has had absolutely no problems with his unit. He gets it serviced once a year. As far as I know, he had to have the battery in it replaced once in all these years. I want to say he paid about $5K for his unit.

on second thought it’s actually 60 amps 220 volts ... plenty of power to run pretty much everything but an electric clothes dryer or whole-house A/C unit which i don’t have anyway. i cool with an evaporative cooler, cook with natural gas oven/range, and heat with natural gas furnace, and heat water with natural gas, and use LEDs and florescents for lighting, so all that’s left is a bunch of electronics and a couple of motors for fridge and freezer. heck, my main panel itself is only 100 amps 220 volts anyway ...

“Did you rig that up, yourself?”

i bought the genset from centralmaindiesel.com, NG ready. you have to add the battery yourself. i bought the biggest unit they had with a honda stationary engine (26 nominal horsepower at sea-level and gasoline-fired), because at my altitude of 5,000 feet, you have to derate the nominal power about 15% and then derate it ANOTHER 15% because NG is that much less powerful than gasoline ...

i built the cart and removable roof and made the 60 amp “extension cord” with twist locks myself, and did the NG plumbing myself (1” all the way from outside oversized meter as it takes a LOT of NG to run that puppy). NG pipe ends with quick connect right inside the garage door, and i bought the 1” NG gas hose pre-made, permanently connected one end to the getset and added the quick connect to the other end.

I paid an electrician to help me run the 60 amp cable from the main panel to right inside of the garage door as well.

the main panel has a manual, mechanical interconnect between the main breaker to the outside power and the breaker to where the genset plugs in from the garage, so that only one of those two breakers can be on at any given time. i rigged a red LED across the main power legs that power the main panel from the outside so i can see when the main power comes back on so i know when to disconnect the genset ...

i store the genset under a dust cover inside the heated garage, with the battery connected to a trickle charger, so even in the worst of the winter, that big boy is toasty warm, the battery charged up, and it starts instantly at the push of a button ...

it takes about 15 minutes to unlimber it, connect the gas hose and “extension cable”, roll it outside and start it up, and flip the breakers ...

Very cool!

Ours switches over, automatically.

After having no power, for weeks, after Hurricane Ike, we installed a whole house generator.

After Harvey....it ran for two weeks solid, without a hitch.

Our closest neighbors (who don’t have a generator) would come over and charge all of their electronics/power reserves to get them a fan and phones, etc, for the day.

I have no idea if they ever got a generator.

This is hurricane country and power goes out for weeks, sometimes. We also have a/c units that are nice to keep fired up, since we live in the swamp :-)

I think at least half of the people out in our rural area now have WH generators.

I like your rig. Works perfect, for your needs, it sounds like.

“Ours switches over, automatically.”

yeah, i considered that, but it requires a permanent outdoor installation and would require a permanent outdoor installation on my lot, AND i was always concerned that the whole thing would be buried in three feet of snow in a raging blizzard and frozen ice cold when i needed it the most ... so, i basically have the exact opposite situation as you regarding climate conditions, hence the different solution ... however, as i get even older, i might wish i had an automatic setup ...
