It would never fly today. Washington Bullets is another example.

It is representative of the accumulation of where we are going, not limited to this one reference. In recent years, it began with Kate Smith and “God Bless America.” We should have cared then, we should care now. The PC crowd has no boundaries. Sure, this singular example is minuscule but in total we have seen just a fraction of what these degenerates will do.

Ah yes. Washington Bullets was changed to Washington Wizards, due to the owner allegedly being concerned about somehow encouraging or endorsing gun violence.

No word as to whether the youth gangs of Washington were inspired to get rid of their guns, when they learned that the name of the team was changed.

And if the corners and DB’s don’t keep 6’ social distancing from the receivers I’m assuming that’s pass interference???

The Cincinnati Reds in the early 1950s, a conservative team in what was a conservative area, changed their named to the Redlegs so not to be associated with the “Red Scare” at the time.

What happens to the Columbus Blue Jackets? Named after a civil war reference but which goes first the city’s name or the hockey team’s nickname?

FTA:

“Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery,” Oregon State president Ed Ray said in a statement.”

Please tell that lie to the ancestors of the hundreds of thousands of Union soldiers who fought and died in that war to end slavery. With Emancipation that war was one of the great triumphs of freedom.

Why not drop University from Oregon and Oregon State and substitute Play School. It fits.

Unbelievable. The ignorance is jaw dropping. What about the Spanish Civil War, The Russian Civil War, the English Civil War, and dozens more civil wars throughout history?

Ostensibly the people who run the university are supposed to be educated. Yeah right.

Here are some words:

“Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery,” Oregon State president Ed Ray said in a statement. “While not intended as reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history. That we did not act before to change the name was a mistake. We do so now, along with other important actions to advance equal opportunity and justice for all and in recognition that Black Lives Matter.”

Wasn’t it also-to an extent-to end slavery?

Perfect time to insert the line from the end of Godfather II, the retro scene when Sonny said to Michael “Did you go to college to get stupid?”

Wait until the animal rights activists get “re-discovered”.

Pet “ownership” is sure to be attacked—I am amazed it hasn’t happened yet.

Excellent question. Columbus Blue Jackets has got to go, both the city name and the nickname.

Many nicknames are troublesome in today’s politically correct world.

There are many examples.

Boston Celtics is offensive to the actual Celtic people. Fighting Irish of Notre Dame is similarly offensive.

Green Bay Packers is offensive to real meat packers.
Pittsburgh Steelers is offensive to real steel workers.
Dallas Cowboys is offensive to real cowboys.

All the animal nicknames are offensive to PETA types.

Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas Raiders are all troublesome as they endorse criminal behavior.

Philadelphia 76ers and New England Patriots harken back to the American revolution, which is verboten to these radicals in today’s climate.

Portland Trail Blazers harkens back to the settlement of the American West, which similarly will offend the politically correct crowd.

I’m sure there are other troublesome names too.

"Changing this name is overdue as it represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery,"

Don't they teach American history at Oregon and Oregon State? If they did, they would know that those who fought to perpetuate slavery didn't call it the Civil War. Confederate Vice President Alexander Hamilton Stephens dubbed the conflict the War Between the States, and other Southern names were the War for Southern Independence, the War of Yankee Aggression, etc. It was President Lincoln--the Great Emancipator--who popularized the name Civil War.

civil war is an actual term.

That’s why it’s called the “American Civil War”.

Just because we obsess over ours doesnt not mean it was ever the only one.

When I was growing up, they were the Redlegs, and I still call them that. However, the name Reds may have to go because of its modern-day association with Republicans and patriots.
