The Apartment is a 1960 American romantic comedy-drama film produced and directed by Billy Wilder from a screenplay he co-wrote with I. A. L. Diamond.
The story follows C.C. Bud Baxter (Lemmon), an insurance clerk who, in the hope of climbing the corporate ladder, lets more senior coworkers use his Upper West Side apartment to conduct extramarital affairs. Bud is attracted to the elevator operator, Fran Kubelik (MacLaine), who in turn is having an affair with Bud's immediate boss, Sheldrake (MacMurray).
At the 33rd Academy Awards, The Apartment was nominated for ten awards and won five, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.

I have the DVD. It’s a very dark movie, quite a change of pace for Billy Wilder after “Some Like it Hot.”
A pretty good little movie. It’s on my all time list.
I don’t consider it dark at all. Lots of funny scenes plus a happy ending.
Loved the movie.
An absolute classic. Wilder at his cynical best, but with a cautiously upbeat conclusion.
Jack Lemmon is one of my favorite actors of all time. He made it look so easy.
One of these days I'm gonna try to locate the park bench jack Lemon sat on in Central Park during that rain scene.
I’ll never think of My Three Sons the same, that’s for sure.
The Days of Wine and Roses
Beautiful theme, very dark movie.
IMHO, "One, Two, Three" was even better.
He was great in Glengarry, Glenn Ross.
For me it's a tough call, but I would agree.
Funny how many people - in my experience - have never even heard of "One, Two, Three" compared to "the Apartment".
Cagney gave one of the greatest comedic performances of all time.
“Schlemmer, you’re back in the SS....Small Salary!”
Always a favorite. And Shirley MacLaine, although a kook in real life, was cute.
Agreed. And there was also Lilo Pulver...
That reminds me, I need to brush up on the umlaut.

That’s the thing about Fred MacMurray. Terrific actor, one of my favorites. What’s interesting about him is he had - in a way - two careers. The first where he played many questionable types, including what I call his “Unholy Trinity” - Double Indemnity, The Caine Mutiny, and The Apartment. He’s a real A-hole in all 3 movies.
Then he hooks up with Disney and does all that “Flubber” stuff, does the show “My Three Sons” and completely reinvents himself as wholesome “America’s Dad”.
Pretty wild.
