I have the DVD. It’s a very dark movie, quite a change of pace for Billy Wilder after “Some Like it Hot.”

I don’t consider it dark at all. Lots of funny scenes plus a happy ending.
Loved the movie.

An absolute classic. Wilder at his cynical best, but with a cautiously upbeat conclusion.

Jack Lemmon is one of my favorite actors of all time. He made it look so easy.

Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemon were also in Irma la Douce which was based in Paris.
That hot table dance from MacLaine.

I remember as a kid the "Theme From The Apartment" always being on the car radio. But I just discovered the film a few years ago...a true classic,it's now one of my all time favorites.I guess you could call it a "dark comedy".
One of these days I'm gonna try to locate the park bench jack Lemon sat on in Central Park during that rain scene.

Wilder was a great director just not a very nice man.
I saw an interview of him on TCM about 18 years ago. Oh boy. What a creep. He basically trashed everybody.
I think Double Indemnity and Witness for the Prosecution are two of his best movies. Double Indemnity also had Fred MacMurray in it.

The Days of Wine and Roses
Beautiful theme, very dark movie.

An absolute classic. Wilder at his cynical best, IMHO, "One, Two, Three" was even better.

Jack Lemmon is one of my favorite actors of all time. He made it look so easy. He was great in Glengarry, Glenn Ross.

IMHO, "One, Two, Three" was even better. For me it's a tough call, but I would agree.
Funny how many people - in my experience - have never even heard of "One, Two, Three" compared to "the Apartment".

Cagney gave one of the greatest comedic performances of all time.

Always a favorite. And Shirley MacLaine, although a kook in real life, was cute.
To: dfwgator
Cagney gave one of the greatest comedic performances of all time. Agreed. And there was also Lilo Pulver...

That reminds me, I need to brush up on the umlaut.

That’s the thing about Fred MacMurray. Terrific actor, one of my favorites. What’s interesting about him is he had - in a way - two careers. The first where he played many questionable types, including what I call his “Unholy Trinity” - Double Indemnity, The Caine Mutiny, and The Apartment. He’s a real A-hole in all 3 movies.
Then he hooks up with Disney and does all that “Flubber” stuff, does the show “My Three Sons” and completely reinvents himself as wholesome “America’s Dad”.
Pretty wild.
