In an increasingly antiracist era when problematic iconography ranging from Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben to even the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee car and country band Lady Antebellums name is being reassessed, revised or retired, Americas national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, seems to be striking a wrong note. Last week, protesters in San Francisco toppled a statue of the songs composer, Francis Scott Key, a known slaveholder who once said that African-Americans were a distinct and inferior race of people, which all experience proves to be the greatest evil that afflicts a community. This week, Liana Morales, an Afro-Latinx student at New Yorks Urban Assembly School for the Performing Arts, refused to sing The Star-Spangled Banner at her virtual graduation ceremony, explaining to the Wall Street Journal, With everything thats happening, if I stand there and sing it, Im being complicit to a system that has oppressed people of color. Instead, Morales performed Lift Every Voice and Sing, a hymn widely considered to be the Black national anthem.

These people are sick.
I never cared for the Start Spangled Banner, I’ve always favored America The Beautiful....
Lyndsey Parker, please feel free to kill yourself.
The author is white. BLM tells me that all whites are racist and shouldt be trusted. Therefore, the author is a racist and shouldnt be trusted.
Liberals are only 20% of the population so why not replace them.
Reassessed? Riots are reassessment? The family of the aunt Jemima have stayed publicly they wish to not to change iconography of the brand No ones asking them
Thats not reassessment
I have always favored the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
I love seeing the “Star Bangled Banner” at the Smithsonian American History museum. I guess that flag is so problematic it needs to taken outside and burned.
Because COMMUNISM.
>>Powell, for his part, suggests John Lennons Imagine, which he says is the most beautiful, unifying, all-people, all-backgrounds-together kind of song you could have.
Give up your religion
Give up your country
Glorious Communism never did any harm, right??? < / sarcasm >
Charlie Manson was white and tried to instigate a race war too, he allegedly believed that after the shooting was over he’d be able to step in and take over.
What the **** is an afro-latina?
I remember actually seeing him near Independence California in 1969 hitchhiking with a couple of girls. My family was on a camping trip in the Sierras but didn’t put two and two together until hearing that he was arrested shortly afterwards. He was an evil murderous bastard. He’d fit in well with these Atifa creeps now.
I vote for, ‘We Are The World’. And when we sing it, we have to sway sideways, like Stevie Wonder. He did this so he would bump into the mic!
Come on! Everybody sing now!
