Until 1931 there was other national anthems: "Hail Columbia" and "My Country, 'Tis of Thee". Those two potential alternatives are unacceptable. Of course, "Hail Columbia" is name invoked Columbus. "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" is problematic because of the lyric "Land of the pilgrims' pride," not being inclusive enough.
