The Three Gorges Dam is one of the biggest if not the biggest gravity dam in the world. China is currently seeing record flooding, with three-four days of rain still in the future for the area around the dam.
When the dam was under construction, they asked foreign consultants to come in and inspect the dam. The consultants noted poor concrete quality and insufficient rebar supports. The Chinese then kicked the consultants out and called them racist.

The dam itself has taken damage from a 2012 earthquake and is now currently stressed. If it were to break, millions of lives could be at stake, especially since a huge amount of power is wired through the dam, thus, if it breaks during the night, people could be making a blind rush into the dark and into a wall of water.
I like to say, and this is original me, that the Chinese are really good at making things that look just like the real thing...
Chinese manufacturing does only one thing really well - deceive the customer.
Cut apart a cheap ChiCom kitchen tool like you can get at your grocery store. You will find stainless-plated pot-metal held together by whale snot.
Chinese manufacturing is more like making a Hollywood movie set, than anything else.

In most cases, they are making something for a Western market that they do not understand, or frankly, care about. Why should they?

I think the estimate is 60M dead if the dam suddenly collapses. Something that India, no doubt, knows too.

The ChiComs aren’t really as atheistic as the Soviets were. They generally give a pass to Confucianism and Chinese folk religion, because the ChiComs are still nationalistic and those things are native to the culture.

I once took a course on Soviet politics. During one of their 5-year plans, this certain Soviet nail factory was given a quota. It had to produce so many tons of nails per year. Well, the manager realized it was easier to produce big nails than it was to produce small nails. So he produced nothing but really big nails.
He got a medal for meeting his quota. The big nails just sat in the back lot and rusted. No one needed nails that big.
